'Not Looking To Escalate, Want Constructive Ties' With India: Canada PM

Last month, India asked Canada to downsize its diplomatic staff in the country.

Toronto:

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Tuesday said Canada was going through an “extremely challenging time” with India but asserted that Ottawa will continue to have “constructive relations” with New Delhi, amid the diplomatic row between the two countries over the killing of a Khalistani separatist.

Speaking to reporters in Ottawa, Mr Trudeau also said that it’s important for Canada to have diplomats on the ground in India, amid a report by London-based Financial Times that New Delhi wants as many as 41 of 62 remaining Canadian diplomats out of the country, the Toronto Sun newspaper reported.

“Obviously, we’re going through an extremely challenging time with India right now,” Mr Trudeau was quoted as saying by the Canadian newspaper.

He, however, did not confirm the FT report that India has asked Canada to withdraw 41 of 62 diplomats from the country.

Asked if his government would retaliate by asking India to remove diplomats based in Canada, Mr Trudeau insisted his government would try to keep working with New Delhi.

“We’re not looking to escalate, as I’ve said, we’re going to be doing the work that matters in continuing to have constructive relations with India through this extremely difficult time,” Mr Trudeau was quoted as saying by the state-run CBC News.

Tensions flared between India and Canada last month following Mr Trudeau’s allegations of “potential” involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on June 18 in British Columbia. India angrily rejected the allegations as “absurd” and “motivated”.

Nijjar was shot dead by two masked gunmen. India had designated Nijjar as a terrorist in 2020.

Last month, India asked Canada to downsize its diplomatic staff in the country, arguing that there should be parity in strength and rank equivalence in the mutual diplomatic presence. The size of Canadian diplomatic staff in India is larger than what New Delhi has in Canada.

India also asked Canada to come down hard on terrorists and anti-India elements operating from its soil and suspended visa services for Canadians.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar told journalists in Washington last week that the governments of India and Canada will have to talk to each other and see how they resolve their differences over the issue and underlined that the larger issue of “permissiveness” must be flagged and addressed.

Air Force To Procure Another Batch Of 97 Tejas Mark-1A Jets

Air Force To Procure Another 97 Tejas Mark-1A Jets

IAF is in the process of finalising a Rs 1.15 lakh crore deal (Representational)

New Delhi:

The Indian Air Force is in the process of finalising a Rs 1.15 lakh crore deal to procure an additional batch of 97 Tejas Mark-1A aircraft besides upgrading 84 Sukhoi-30MKI jets at a cost of Rs 60,000 crore, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari said on Tuesday. In February 2021, the defence ministry sealed a Rs 48,000-crore deal with state-run aerospace major Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd for the procurement of 83 Tejas MK-1A jets for the IAF.

With the additional 97 Tejas Mark-1A jets, the total number of indigenously-developed aircraft being procured by the IAF would go up to 180.

Addressing a press conference ahead of the Air Force Day on October 8, the Chief of Air Staff also said that 84 Sukhoi-30MKI fighter jets will be upgraded at a cost of a little over Rs 60,000 crore.

The defence ministry is also looking at signing a contract with the HAL next year to procure a total of 156 light combat helicopters (LCH) out of which 66 will be for the IAF.

The IAF now operates 10 light combat helicopters.

“We had signed the contract for 83 LCA-Mark 1As. What we are looking at is now to supplement that contract with 97 additional aircraft.

“So it will bring the total to about 180 LCA-Mark-1As. The contract value will be a little over 1.15 lakh crores,” Air Chief Marshal Chaudhari said.

Asked about the timeline for delivery of the LCA Mark-1As as HAL can produce only 15 of them annually, he indicated that the aerospace major may increase the pace of production in partnership with the private sector.

“The contract will be signed with the HAL for an additional 97 LCA Mark-1As. The HAL may decide to increase the number of production lines in partnership with the Indian private industry… That is yet to be decided,” he said.

The Chief of Air Staff said the number of LCA-Mark-1A jets being procured is not linked to future procurement of Tejas Mark-2 Light Combat Aircraft.

The highly anticipated Tejas Mark2 aircraft is expected to be ready for the first flight by 2025.

“When it comes to the numbers (of Tejas Mark-1As), these are not in the view of any Mark 2s or any other future production. These are independent. These are to cater for the drawdown in the MiG-21 fleet,” Air Chief Marshal Chaudhari said.

Tejas is a single-engine multi-role fighter aircraft capable of operating in high-threat air environments.

It has been designed to undertake the air defence, maritime reconnaissance and strike roles.

Air Chief Marshal Chaudhari said the IAF is also finalising procurement of Akash weapon systems, medium-range surface-to-air missile (MRSAM), ‘Pralay’ missile system among others.

“We are planning to sign these contracts sometime in the coming year,” he said.

The IAF Chief said except for the tanker aircraft and multi-role fighter aircraft (MRFA)  project, most of the cases of acquisition are going to be indigenous only.

He also underlined the importance of the space domain.

“Space operations will find many similarities to air operations as compared to operations in any other domain. Freedom to operate in space without interference from the adversary is of vital national importance,” he said.

“A strong, self-reliant, and credible aerospace force would definitely be an essential step towards achieving first of the Five Prans (Panch Pranas) of Amritkaal that is ‘to become a developed country’,” the IAF Chief added.

NewsClick Founder Prabir Purkayastha Arrested In Anti-Terror Case

NewsClick founder Prabir Purkayastha

New Delhi:

Journalist Prabir Purkayastha, the founder of NewsClick, has been arrested under anti-terror law, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, days after a New York Times investigation alleged that the news portal had received funding from a network pushing Chinese propaganda.

Amit Chakravarty, the HR head of the news portal, has also been arrested.

Earlier today, searches at the homes of journalists linked with NewsClick were carried at 20-odd locations across Delhi-NCR and Mumbai, prompting protests from the opposition, with some calling it a “crackdown on press freedom”.

“A total of 37 male suspects have been questioned at premises, 9 female suspects have been questioned at their respective places of stay and digital devices, documents etc. have been seized/collected for examination. The proceedings are still ongoing; so far, two accused, Prabir Purkayastha and Amit Chakravarty have been arrested,” a source from Delhi Police told NDTV, adding that further investigation is underway.

The Delhi Police has claimed that NewsClick received nearly Rs 38 crore from entities with alleged links to China and the funds were used to influence pro-China content on the website.

The police sources added that 29 crore was received as fees for export services while Rs 9 crore was received as FDI through inflating share prices.

The funds, say sources, were also shared with activists Teesta Setalvad and Gautam Navalkha.

Hours after the raids, the Editors Guild of India, the non-profit organisation of journalists, urged the Centre to follow due process, and not make draconian criminal laws “as tools for press intimidation”.

“EGI is concerned that these raids are yet another attempt to muzzle the media. While we recognise that the law must take its course if actual offences are involved, the due process has to be followed. The investigation of specific offences must not create a general atmosphere of intimidation under the shadow of draconian laws, or impinge on the freedom of expression and the raising of dissenting and critical voices,” the Editors Guild said in a statement.

Florida: 11-year-old shoots, injures two teens

Apopka:  An 11-year-old boy retrieved a gun from an unlocked box in his mother’s vehicle and shot two 13-year-olds following an altercation that began during a Pop Warner football practice in central Florida, police said on Tuesday.

The child fired one shot on Monday night, hitting one teen in the arm and the other in the torso, Apopka police Chief Mike McKinley said during a Tuesday morning news conference. He said surveillance video showed that both teens were running away from the boy when the shot was fired.

The two teens are in stable condition, McKinley said.

The shooting was reported about 8:18 pm and officers arrived at the scene about four minutes later, McKinley said.

Responding officers took the gun from the child, and he was detained, McKinley said. The boy was later charged with one count of attempted second-degree murder, and booked into the juvenile assessment center. The chief said the boy’s mother may face a second-degree misdemeanor charge of leaving a gun unsecured.

“As a society, we need to reflect on this. We see this all the time now,” McKinley said. “It’s a shame. No one wants to arrest an 11-year-old by any means.” McKinley added that any additional charges will be up to the court system.

“Our hope is that the 11-year-old gets the assistance he needs to make sure this isn’t a resolution for the rest of his life.

He’s 11, he’s got a long life ahead of him,” McKinley said. “There’s no doubt that he can turn things around. Hopefully our court system, with diversion programs and counselling and other things, can help him past this and move to a point where reaching for a firearm is not his resolution for the future.” McKinley did not say what the altercation was about. An investigation is underway.

He said there were lots of parents and children at the practice, and additional adults and children were at a nearby soccer practice. No one else was injured.

Apopka is about 20 miles (32 kilometers) northwest of Orlando, Florida.
