Opinion: Avoiding water crisis

By AS Kumar

Water is at the core of sustainable development given that it is critical for socioeconomic development, healthy ecosystems and human survival. The widening water demand-supply gap is visible with increasing water shortages and depleting groundwater tables. Deteriorating water quality is an add-on stressor with impacts on human health and ecosystems. According to the Water Action decade initiative 2018-2028, there will be a steep fall of around 40 per cent in fresh water availability by 2030, which alongside a rising population, will push us towards a global water crisis. The scenario, therefore, calls for immediate actions towards identifying and implementing appropriate strategies for an improved water scenario, water security and sustainability.

Industrial Water

Water, the most essential and indispensable component in any industrial process, is a vital factor that influences the decisions of investors and industrialists. As per the National Commission on Integrated Water Resources Development (NCIWRD), industrial water demand nearly doubled — from 37 billion cubic metres (bcm) in 2010 to 63 bcm in 2023. The NCIWRD estimated that water demand will increase to 67 bcm in 2025 and 81 bcm in 2050. So, the Industrial sector must take proactive measures to improve its water usage and be water neutral across processes.

The Make in India programme launched by the central government to promote India as the most preferred global manufacturing destination has a huge reliance on the effective use of water. Automotive, electronic systems, design and manufacturing, renewable energy, roads and highways, pharmaceuticals and food processing sectors are important for boosting the Make in India initiative. Industries need to optimise water use and get the most out of each unit of water consumed.

The Automotive Mission Plan 2026 envisions the automotive industry as the engine of Make in India and projects a four-fold growth from the existing $74 billion to $300 billion. But, on the other hand, this growth is going to create an additional demand for water resources. According to estimates by the automobile industry, producing a car requires 39,000 gallons of water. In addition, the car painting process needs a significant volume of water since most of those are water-based products.

Electronics Manufacturing

Under the National Policy on Electronics 2019, electronics hardware manufacturing aims to achieve a turnover of $400 billion by 2025. The electronics manufacturing industry needs ultra-pure water at various stages of its processes and applications. The generation of one unit of ultra-pure water requires multiple units of raw water, depending on the required quality. Experts estimate that it takes nearly 2,200 gallons of water, including 1,500 gallons of ultra-pure water, to create one integrated circuit on a wafer, and one computer can contain a multitude of those little wafers, or chips.

Renewable Energy

India is striving to achieve 50 per cent of cumulative electric power installed from renewables by 2030. Renewable energy generation is also linked to water availability, both directly and indirectly. To clean a 100-MW capacity solar plant, 1 to 5 million gallons of water is used, industry reports suggest. There is a need to focus on innovations to reduce water usage in the energy sector. Hydrogen energy is directly linked to water, as its decomposition produces the required hydrogen.

Roads and highways are the infrastructure that interacts directly with water courses. So, it is important that the roads and highway network be planned and implemented with due consideration and collaboration for water conservation.

Pharmaceutical, Food

An estimate suggests that India’s pharmaceutical industry is expected to grow to $130 billion by 2030. Further, our export of medical devices is expected to reach $10 billion by 2025. The availability of pure water of high quality is inevitable for the pharmaceutical industry in almost all stages of the manufacturing cycle.

According to a study published by the World Wide Fund, 80 per cent of the top 30 global pharmaceutical companies list water as one of their top sustainability focus areas and 83 per cent of the companies regularly undertake water risk assessments. Water is an integral component in the operation of the food processing industry as well. According to the UN FAO, of the 90 per cent of water consumed in agriculture, 70 per cent is for food production and 20 per cent is for food processing. This indicates the scope of process improvement in the sector to bring down water intensity.

Collective Accountability

The Make in India programme can deal with this by setting a paradigm shift through the circular use of water and a water-neutral approach. While the circular use encourages reuse and recycling of fresh water drawn, the water neutral approach aims at reducing the water requirement as low as possible. For water conservation, the industrial sector must invent water neutral solutions that could be replicated across sectors.

The NITI Aayog suggests that the inception of new industries should be such that it does not increase the withdrawal of water within a hydrological unit or a watershed. The government must encourage industries to go for rainwater harvesting and grey water (that which has already been used domestically, commercially and industrially) recharge on their premises. Pollution Control Board authorities should inspect grey water disposal on site, and if any violation is found, should impose a penalty on violators. Industries also should take responsibility for the conservation of water and protect the environment. The governments should invite more innovations in water conservation and reduce the usage of water.

The idea of producing more with less should be the unwavering guiding principle behind water management in the industrial sector. Attaining water conservation/water neutral status is a journey that calls for collective accountability and responsible action. It is a process that will evolve with time, given increasing climate variability impacting resource availability and demand pressures that continue to rise. Cognizant of the challenges, it is imperative to take firm steps in taking this journey ahead.

Indian Women's Hockey Team Beat Japan 2-1, Assured Of ACT Semis Berth

An in-form India eked out a narrow 2-1 win over Japan to register their fourth straight win and storm into the semifinals of the women’s Asian Champions Trophy hockey tournament on Tuesday. After two goalless quarters, Navneet Kaur (31st minute) and Sangita Kumari (47th) scored for India, while Japan’s lone goal came from the stick of Kana Urata (37th). It was a match between two undefeated sides in the tournament and it lived up to the billing. India had earlier defeated Thailand 7-1 in their opener before getting the better of Malaysia and China 5-0 and 2-1 respectively. The Japanese too were undefeated coming into the match, having registered wins over Malaysia 3-0, South Korea 4-0 and Thailand 4-0 respectively.

It was a battle between Indian attack and Japan’s defence in the first quarter as the hosts relentlessly put pressure on the opposition citadel but failed to produce any result.

The Japanese mostly relied on counter attacks to unsettle the Indians but failed to breach their defence.

Both the teams failed to create any clear cut scoring opportunities from field effort in the first quarter.

However, it was Japan who had the brightest of chances in the form of penalty corner in the 13th minute but Ishika Chaudhary was upto the task to keep the ball away from the net as the first quarter ended goalless.

The Japanese put pressure in the opening moments of the second quarter and created a couple of attacks but all those went in vain. The story was the same as it was in the first quarter as both the teams failed to create any real scoring opportunity.

In the last 4 minutes, the Indians came close to scoring at least thrice but were unable to finish the scoring shots.

India soon secured their first penalty corner but vice-captain Deep Grace Ekka’s threatening shot to the right of Japanese goalie was well defended.

It was Japan’s turn to earn a penalty corner next but the Indian defence was upto the task.

The deadlock was finally broken a minute after the change of ends through Navneet.

A deceptive pass from Salima Tete in the circle area found Navneet, who turned around and fired a powerful backhand shot into the Japanese net.

It took Japan just six minutes to draw level from their third penalty corner. Urata brought her side back into the match, perfectly converting the set piece with a high flick to the top right corner of the Indian goal.

In the 39th minute, India secured another penalty corner, only to be denied by the Japanese goalkeeper.

It was an electrifying performance from both the sides in the fourth and final quarter, which witnessed end-to-end hockey. But it was India, who were the dominant side on display.

Two minutes into the final quarter, India secured a penalty corner and Deepika’s low dragflick was deflected in by Sangita to hand the hosts a 2-1 lead.

India secured another penalty corner in the 53rd minute but the effort was saved by Japanese goalkeeper Akio Tanaka.

From there on, the Japanese pressed hard for the equaliser but the Indians defended bravely to keep their opponents at bay and continue their winning run.

'Ceasefire now': Anti-war protesters confront US officials at Senate hearing

A large number of protesters with their hands covered in red paint symbolizing blood have interrupted a congressional hearing, demanding Washington stop funding Israel’s killing of Palestinians under siege in Gaza.

The anti-war protesters repeatedly called for a “ceasefire now!” as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin were appealing to the Senate Appropriations Committee on Tuesday for billions of dollars more of US taxpayers’ money for funding the military forces of Israel, Ukraine and other Washington allies.

They denounced Washington for funding the Israeli regime forces committing genocide against millions of Palestinians in the occupied lands.

The protesters who had their hands covered in red paint to show the US government had blood on its hands due to the Gaza genocide stood in the crowd and called for “Ceasefire now!” and “Protect the children of Gaza!”

One protester cited the thousands of Palestinian children killed in Gaza since the brutal Israeli forces launched airstrikes and, recently, a ground offensive.

The anti-war protesters stood up one by one as Blinken wanted to begin his speech before shouting over him again.

He was forced to pause several times. The police quickly escorted the protesters out. It said 12 people had been arrested.

Blinken acknowledged he heard the protesters during the session. However, he insisted the US must stick to its allies, giving all-out support to the Israeli forces in their weeks-long killing of the Gazans in the besieged Palestinian territory with US-made weapons.

“I … hear, very much, the passions expressed in this room and outside this room,” Blinken said at the end of his opening remarks.

“All of us are committed to the protection of civilian life. All of us know the suffering that is taking place as we speak, all of us are determined to see it end,” he said.

He added, however, that it was imperative that the US stand with its allies.

Austin too insisted that it was a “moral responsibility and strategic imperative” for Israel to minimize civilian casualties within Gaza and the West Bank, where some Israeli settlers have murdered more hapless Palestinians.

US President Joe Biden, who claims that funding US allies is vital to America’s security, has asked Congress to approve tens of billions of dollars for Israel, Ukraine, Chinese Taipei and other military purposes.

Biden’s call for funding the Israeli forces to kill the Palestinians has drawn huge criticism amid international appeals for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza to protect the civilians under the Zionists’ fire.

Meantime, the protest at the Capitol Hill hearing reflected the heightened tensions that have arisen in the United States since Israeli forces started the mass killing of Gazans on October 7 when the Al-Aqsa Storm operation was launched by Hamas.

While Blinken and Austin were asking for more money, FBI Director Christopher Wray and US Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas were at a separate congressional hearing explaining the new threats in the US.

Wray said the US supporting the Israeli regime forces’ ongoing slaughter of the hapless Palestinians blocked in Gaza, who are mostly women, children and the elderly, “has raised the threat of attack in the United States to a whole other level.”

The FBI chief said the agency is concerned about the potential for individuals or small groups inspired by Hamas to attack within US borders. He said the FBI is on the alert for Islamophobic attacks as well, pointing to a federal hate crimes investigation that is ongoing after an Illinois man was charged with murder at the state level after the killing of a 6-year-old Palestinian-American boy. “This is not a time for panic, but it is a time for vigilance.”

Meanwhile, Muslim American leaders and a number of Democratic Party activists have said they will work to mobilize millions of Muslim voters to withhold donations and votes toward Biden’s 2024 re-election bid unless he takes immediate steps to secure a Gaza ceasefire.

The National Muslim Democratic Council, which includes Democratic Party leaders from hotly contested states likely to decide the election, called on Biden to use his influence with Israel to broker a ceasefire by 5 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

In an open letter entitled “2023 Ceasefire Ultimatum,” the Muslim leaders pledged to mobilize Muslim voters to “withhold endorsement, support, or votes for any candidate who endorses the Israeli offensive against the Palestinian people.”

At least 8,610 Palestinians have been killed since the Israelis started the onslaught of Gazans earlier this month, while more than 23,000 Gazans have been wounded in the besieged territory. The Apartheid Israeli regime forces’ “total siege” of Gaza has left a dire need for water, food, medicine and fuel across Gaza.

Iran lambasts Israeli regime's attack on Jabalia refugee camp

This action added another disgrace to the long list of war crimes committed by the Zionist regime, the senior Iranian diplomat said.

He called on the international community, especially the United Nations, to fulfill their responsibility to stop the Zionist regime’s war machine.

Gaza officials have said that dozens of people were killed in the strike carried out by the Zionist Israeli regime military on Jabalia refugee camp in the north of the Gaza Strip.

There was an Israeli air attack that targeted a group of residential homes in Jabalia camp in the north of Gaza on Tuesday afternoon.

Al-Jazeera reported that at least 100 people were killed in the Zionist regime strike.

The latest images and video from the Jabalia refugee camp show buildings heavily damaged as rescuers and volunteers use their bare hands to search for survivors in huge amounts of concrete debris.

Gaza’s Interior Ministry said a number of Israeli airstrikes hit apartment buildings in a residential area of Jabaliya refugee camp in northern Gaza.

The ministry said some 400 people are either dead or injured.

Ministry spokesperson Ayed al-Bazm said at a news conference that six bombs hit the residential area.

Exclusive: Hamas says Al-Aqsa Storm performed ‘miracle in six minutes’

The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas says Operation al-Aqsa Storm against the occupied territories which was launched on October 7 performed a miracle over a span of six minutes and shattered the image of the Israeli military.

Ghazi Hamad, a member of Hamas’ political bureau, made the statement in an exclusive interview with Iran’s Press TV news network on Tuesday, the 25th day of al-Aqsa Storm, the largest military operation by the Gaza-based Palestinian resistance groups against Israel in decades.

“I think the October 7 victory changed the whole history in Palestine, not only in Palestine but also in the whole Middle East,” Hamad said. “We succeeded to break the military image of Israel forever. A small group of fighters, some 1,000 fighters from the al-Qassam Brigades, succeeded in [just] six minutes … to destroy all the military sites along 45 kilometers… I think we made a miracle at that time.”

Israel is very weak and is only protected by technology, he said, adding that they have no spirit and determination to fight.

Pointing to the high number of Palestinians, including women and children, killed by the Israeli military during al-Aqsa Storm, Hamad said the Israeli regime has committed various crimes and atrocities against Palestine over the past decade.

“It is the price for dignity and freedom of the Palestinian people,” he added.

Asked about Israel’s repeated attempts to invade the Gaza Strip by land, the member of Hamas’ political bureau said, “The al-Qassam Brigades is highly prepared… It will be a very hard confrontation but we believe that the al-Qassam Brigades will do their best to stop them and defeat them and make Israel … [unable] to invade Gaza… We are 100 percent sure that Israel will achieve nothing.”

Hamad stressed that the United States, the United Kingdom and France are the “real” partners in Israeli crimes against Palestinians as they support Tel Aviv in its killing, genocide and massacre in Gaza.

“We, as Palestinians, have a strong determination, good spirit, and we have the ability, the capacity, the decision and intention to fight until we put an end to this occupation,” he said. “Israel is a dangerous cancer in our region and we need to eliminate it, eradicate it.”

The Hamas official also called on the entire Muslim community and all people across the world who believe in humanity and dignity to stand up for Palestinians and their right to self-defense, and stand against Israeli crimes and aggression in Palestine.

Israel waged a genocidal war on the blockaded Gaza Strip on October 7 after Hamas-led Palestinian resistance groups carried out Operation al-Aqsa Storm against the occupying entity.

Since the start of the aggression, the regime has been committing war crimes in Gaza, killing at least 8,525 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injuring some 21,048 others.

Israel has imposed a “complete siege” on the territory, cutting off fuel, electricity, food and water to the more than two million Palestinians living there.

Would have been happier if I could avoid the attack, says MP’s gunman

Sangareddy: Begari Prabhakar, the gunman of Medak MP Kotha Prabhakar Reddy, said he had not realised that the MP was stabbed as he was nabbing the accused, Gatani Raju, when he found him moving aggressively close to the MP.

“I first thought I had successfully thwarted Raju’s attempt to attack the MP,” said Prabhakar, who was standing behind the MP and caught Raju with both hands, snatched away the knife and pushed him aside within the fraction of a second. A second gunman, Gangaram, then joined in and dragged Raju away further.

“I realised the MP was injured when I saw him clutching his abdomen in pain while blood was oozing out,” a visibly emotional Prabhakar said.
Though MP did not feel much pain initially, the severity of the injury aggravated on their way to the Gajwel Hospital, he added.

Prabhakar’s quick response won praise from different quarters, with Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao too thanking him personally during his visit to Yashoda Hospital on Monday.

Speaking to Telangana Today, Prabhakar said he had just done his duty. However, the incident left him in great pain because the MP was not one to harm anyone. Stating that he had been working as a gunman with Prabhakar Reddy for over four years, Prabhakar said he had seen Reddy respond to everyone kindly.

“I would have been more happy if had I completely avoided the injury to the MP,” said Prabhakar, a resident of Peddapur village of Sadasivpet in Sangareddy district.
