Watch: Steve Smith Pulls Off Catch Of The Century, Rohit Sharmas Reaction Goes Viral

Steve Smith took a brilliant catch to dismiss Hardik Pandya© Twitter

Australia stand-in skipper Steve Smith is well known for his fielding in the slip cauldron and he once again proved his mettle with a stunning catch during the second ODI encounter against India on Sunday. Mitchell Starc ended up claiming five wickets to bundle out India for 117 but the talking point was the catch that ended the innings of Hardik Pandya. Pandya ended up getting a thick edge on a delivery from Sean Abbott and it looked like the ball was too far from Smith at the slips. However, the veteran Aussie cricketer pulled off a full length to his right and his superman effort left India skipper Rohit Sharma and other teammates completely stunned at the dressing room.

The commentators were also left dumbfounded by the brilliance of Smith’s fielding and ex-India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar even suggested that it can be considered for the “catch of the century”.

Starc made full use of helpful conditions to take 5 for 53 as Australia bundled out India for a meagre 117 in 26 overs in the second ODI in Visakhapatnam on Sunday.

Starc’s ninth five-wicket haul in ODIs along with fine display from Sean Abbott (3/23) and Nathan Ellis (2/13) gave Indian batters no chance to settle down with the ball seaming and swinging prodigiously.

Virat Kohli (31) and Axar Patel (29 not out) were the only batters to cross the 20-run mark.

"Worst Of Inflation Is Behind Us": RBI Chief

Worst Of Inflation Is Behind Us: RBI Chief

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said there is a declining trend in global growth

Mumbai:

Reserve Bank governor Shaktikanta Das on Friday said despite the multiple shocks to the global economy from the pandemic, the Ukraine war and synchronised monetary policy tightening across the world, the domestic economy and financial sector are stable and the worst of inflation is behind us.

He also said the rupee has exhibited the least volatility among its peer currencies despite the massive appreciation of the greenback.

Delivering the 17th KP Hormis (Federal Bank founder) commemorative lecture in Kochi this evening, Das underlined that despite the overwhelming concerns a few months back about an imminent global recession, the global economy has shown greater resilience, reducing the probability of a hard landing.

The governor said there is a declining trend in global growth. There is also considerable uncertainty about structural shifts taking place in the drivers of inflation, ranging from labour market dynamics to the concentration of market power and less efficient supply chains.

However, reassuring aspects are global food, energy and other commodity prices have softened from respective peaks and the supply chains are normalising, which should help in achieving disinflation and thus contain imported inflation, he added.

Speaking on the role of India in helping navigate the many emergent crises as it helms the G20 presidency, he said this global role comes to the country in an environment of formidable geo-economic shifts, which have vitiated the global macro-financial outlook.

The capacity of the existing global economic order to manage the severe impact of the multiple shocks is under challenge, leading to severe supply-demand imbalances in critical sectors and giving rise to high inflation in almost all countries.

One key such challenge is fighting the globalisation of inflation– which has soared to multi-decadal highs amid subdued global growth. It has posed complex policy challenges.

As the premier forum for promoting cooperative and effective solutions to global problems, the task of the G20 is cut out, given the difficulties in building consensus and the uncertainty around the outlook on geopolitics, he said and underlined that the ongoing global crisis is both an opportunity and major test for G20, which represents 85 per cent of world GDP and 75 per cent of global trade.

Quoting the IMF he said with the Ukraine war geopolitics has now been taken over by geo-economics and due to this, the global economy is now experiencing a process of geo-economic fragmentation, operating through five key channels of trade, technology, capital flows, labour mobility and global governance.

Of the multiple risks facing the world community, the surge in inflation has posed a complex monetary policy dilemma in every economy between raising interest rates enough to tame inflation, and at the same time, minimising the growth sacrifice to avoid a hard landing, he said.

On the impact of the dollar’s rise against countries with high external debt, he called upon G20 nations to support those countries so that there is no chance of another global crisis due to this.

He also urged the groupings of the world’s largest 20 economies to ensure that the more vulnerable nations get timely and adequate climate financing.

The aggressive and synchronised monetary policy tightening by systemic central banks since early 2022 and the consequent appreciation of the dollar have led to several economies, with a high share of external debt, becoming highly vulnerable to debt distress, he noted.

Quoting the IMF numbers he said, as much as 15 per cent of the low-income countries are estimated to be already in debt distress, with an additional 45 per cent at high risk of debt distress. About 25 per cent of EMs are also at high risk.

However, the governor said there is nothing to worry about for us on this front, as our external debt is minimal to our balances and the economic growth rate.

The dollar rise has further led to massive capital outflows, resulting in reserve losses, sharp currency depreciations and spiralling imported inflation pressures. In such a situation, addressing the deteriorating debt situation in low and middle-income countries and facilitating coordinated debt treatment by official bilateral and private creditors under a multilateral framework must assume priority for G20, he said.

Summing up, Das said our G20 presidency must focus on digital public infrastructure for financial inclusion, climate change and mitigation to achieve a more inclusive global economic order.

The G20 countries have a major responsibility in providing leadership for global action on climate change and provision of climate finance, together with the transfer of technology, to take this agenda forward, he concluded.

Putin Visits Mariupol As Part Of Surprise Tour Of Occupied Ukraine

Putin Visits Mariupol As Part Of Surprise Tour Of Occupied Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin made a surprise visit to Mariupol, state media reported Sunday, his first to the city since it was captured after a lengthy siege at the start of Moscow’s offensive in Ukraine.

The trip comes after an arrest warrant was issued for Putin by the International Criminal Court, over Russia’s alleged deportation of thousands of Ukrainian children during the conflict.

Russia besieged Mariupol at the start of its offensive last year, destroying the Azovstal steel works, the last holdout of Ukrainian forces in the city.

According to state news agency TASS on Sunday, Putin flew to Mariupol by helicopter on Saturday and took a tour of the city, at times driving a car.

He visited several sites and spoke with residents, and was presented with a report on the reconstruction work of the city.

Putin’s stop in Mariupol comes after his surprise visit to Crimea on Saturday to mark the ninth anniversary of the peninsula’s annexation.

Russian state TV showed him visiting the Black Sea port city of Sevastopol, accompanied by the local Moscow-appointed governor Mikhail Razvozhayev.

Razvozhayev said on the messaging app Telegram that Putin had been expected to take part in the opening of a children’s art school by video link.

“But Vladimir Vladimirovich came in person. Himself. Behind the wheel. Because on such a historic day, the president is always with Sevastopol and the people of Sevastopol,” he said.

Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 following a referendum that was not recognised by Kyiv and the international community.

Addressing the World Economic Forum in Switzerland in January, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said he aimed to take back Crimea, though Moscow has refused to include it in possible peace talks.

– ‘Void’ ICC warrant –
Putin’s visit came after the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for him on Friday over the “deportation” of Ukrainian children.

Kyiv says more than 16,000 Ukrainian children have been deported to Russia since the start of the conflict in February 2022, many of them placed in institutions and foster homes.

ICC prosecutor Karim Khan told AFP that Putin was now liable for arrest if he set foot in any of the court’s more than 120 member states.

The 70-year-old Russian leader has not commented publicly on the warrant, but the Kremlin dismissed its validity as “void” since Russia did not recognise the ICC’s jurisdiction.

The Hague-based court’s decision came ahead of Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s visit to Moscow on Monday to sign accords touted as ushering in a new era of ties.

China, a major Russian ally, has sought to position itself as a neutral party in the Ukraine conflict, urging Moscow and Kyiv to open negotiations.

But Western leaders have repeatedly criticised Beijing for failing to condemn Russia’s offensive, accusing it of providing Moscow with diplomatic cover for its campaign.

– Grain deal extended –
In Ankara, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the two sides had agreed to extend a deal that has allowed Ukraine, a major grain exporter, to resume exports after its Black Sea ports were blocked by Russian warships.

But there was disagreement over the terms.

Ukraine’s infrastructure minister said the deal had been extended for 120 days, but a spokeswoman for Russia’s foreign ministry said Moscow had agreed to a 60-day extension.

The deal brokered by Turkey and the United Nations in July 2022 had allowed for the safe passage of exports, and had already been extended for 120 days in November.

The fighting is now concentrated in the eastern Donetsk region of Ukraine, particularly the city of Bakhmut.

Russian strikes hit the nearby city of Kramatorsk on Saturday, killing two people and wounding 10, said regional governor Pavlo Kyrylenko, who accused Moscow of using cluster bombs in the attack.

AFP journalists in Kramatorsk heard around 10 explosions go off nearly simultaneously just before 4:00 pm local time (1400 GMT) and saw smoke rise above a park in the southern part of the city.

A woman died at the scene from her wounds, they saw.

'Millet Man' PV Satheesh Dies At 77 After Prolonged Illness

'Millet Man' PV Satheesh Dies At 77 After Prolonged Illness

PV Satheesh was one of the icons of civil society activism in India.

Hyderabad:

The man who deserves the honour of being called the Millet Man of India for pioneering work in demonstrating an alternate, ecologically sustainable agricultural food system, died in Hyderabad on Sunday morning after a prolonged illness.

PV Satheesh was founder and Executive Director of Deccan Development Society (DDS) that worked out of Pastapur village in Sangareddy district of Telangana, where last rites of the 77-year-old will take place on Monday at 10.30 am.

As DDS Board member Vinod Pavarala put it, Mr Satheesh was one of the icons of civil society activism in India. His Zaheerabad-based organisation in rural Telangana successfully championed issues of agri-biodiversity, food sovereignty, women’s empowerment, social justice, local knowledge systems, participatory development, and community media.

The women’s groups, called sanghams, of DDS, and their steadfast adherence to millet cultivation and organic agriculture, led the way nationally in offering demonstrable alternatives to the dominant agricultural paradigm.

cosvjkao

The recent efforts to incorporate millets into the public distribution system owes much to the work of DDS under his guidance. Years ago, Mr Sathesh had set up a local public distribution system, run by women farmers, solely based on millet crops.

Born on June 18, 1945, in Mysore, Periyapatna Venkatasubbaiah Satheesh was a graduate from the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, New Delhi, and started out as a journalist. He went on to work as a pioneering television producer for nearly two decades for Doordarshan, making programmes related to rural development and rural literacy in the then-united Andhra Pradesh. He played an important role in the historical Satellite Instructional Television Experiment (SITE) in the 1970s.

In the early 1980s, Mr Satheesh, along with a few friends, started the Deccan Development Society in the semi-arid Zaheerabad region by bringing together poor Dalit women in the villages, to rediscover their faith in traditional knowledge systems that helped challenge hunger, malnutrition, land degradation, loss of biodiversity, gender injustice, and social deprivation.

While Mr Satheesh led the organisation for nearly four decades to make it an internationally acclaimed NGO, and an inspiring example that has motivated similar experiments in millet revival and promotion across the country, what he also did effectively was to create powerful leaders from among the illiterate women, from the most marginalised communities, who became empowered ambassadors of change.

As the director of DDS, PV Satheesh’s long-standing efforts resulted in improving the livelihoods of thousands of poor women across 75 villages in Telangana. He also led several national and international networks like Millet Network of India (MINI), South Against Genetic Engineering (SAGE), AP Coalition in Defence of Diversity, and was also the India Coordinator for SANFEC, the South Asian Network for Food, Ecology, and Culture, a five-country South Asian network with over 200 ecological groups.

He was formerly Board Member, Genetic Resources Action International (GRAIN), Barcelona, Spain, and was also a member of the International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems (IPES-Food), Brussels, Belgium.

Mr Satheesh also used his experience in the media to start India’s first Community Media Trust, a grassroots media centre where illiterate Dalit women were trained in film-making, to democratise media spaces, and also followed it up with the launch of India’s first rural, civil society-led community radio station, Sangham Radio.

He was a tireless worker and leader in the NGO sector who remained committed to his principles and was a generous mentor to many young people. He was recently honoured in Delhi by the People’s Convention on Millets by RRA (Revitalising Rainfed Agriculture) Network for his lifetime contributions in making millets a people’s agenda.

Pak Police Files Terrorism Case Against Ex-PM Imran Khan

Pak Police Files Terrorism Case Against Ex-PM Imran Khan

Islamabad:

Pakistani police on Sunday registered a terrorism case against Imran Khan and over a dozen PTI leaders for indulging in vandalism, attacking security personnel and creating unrest outside the judicial complex in Islamabad ahead of a court hearing in a graft case involving the ousted premier.

Clashes erupted outside the Islamabad Judicial Complex on Saturday when Mr Khan arrived in Islamabad from Lahore to attend a much-awaited hearing in the Toshakhana case.

During the confrontation between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf workers and police, over 25 security personnel were injured, prompting Additional District and Sessions Judge Zafar Iqbal to defer the court hearing till March 30.

The case was registered against arrested PTI workers and wanted party leaders. About 17 PTI leaders were named in the FIR lodged by the Islamabad Police, Geo News reported.

The FIR states that the workers damaged the police check post and the main gate of the judicial complex, it said.

As many as 18 people were arrested for arson, pelting stones and breaking the judicial complex’s building, said the FIR.

“About two police vehicles and seven motorcycles were burned, and the official vehicle of the station house officer (SHO) was damaged,” it added.

Imran Khan, 70, arrived in Islamabad from Lahore to appear before the court. He was accompanied by his supporters in a convoy.

Soon after he departed for Islamabad to attend the hearing, over 10,000 armed Punjab police personnel breached Mr Khan’s Zaman Park residence in Lahore and arrested dozens of his party workers.

The police personnel, using a power shovel, removed the barricades and tents at the entrance of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party chief’s residence and evicted hundreds of his supporters camping there to prevent Khan’s arrest in the Toshakhana case.

They conducted a search at the house after demolishing its main gate and walls. Punjab Police, whose action ended later, were reportedly met with resistance from PTI workers from inside, resulting in violence. About 10 workers were reportedly injured in the police operation in Lahore.

PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry said on Sunday said the party will get cases registered against police officers involved in the “illegal operations” and violence at Mr Khan’s residence.

“Today, a meeting of the legal team has been called. The way in which the police defied the Lahore High Court’s decision entering Imran Khan’s residence has trampled every rule of the home’s sanctity. [things were] stolen. [They] also took away juice boxes. Innocent people were subjected to torture,” he tweeted.

“Defying court order is unforgivable. The high court should guard its judgment. Cases are being registered on all police officers who conducted illegal operations and were involved in violence,” he said.

Earlier, Imran Khan appeared before Lahore High Court on Friday and assured that he was ready to present himself on Saturday before Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADSJ) Iqbal handling the corruption case against him.

The PTI chief has been in the dock for buying gifts, including an expensive Graff wristwatch, he had received as the premier at a discounted price from the state depository called Toshakhana and selling them for profit.

Established in 1974, the Toshakhana is a department under the administrative control of the Cabinet Division and stores precious gifts given to rulers, parliamentarians, bureaucrats, and officials by heads of other governments and states and foreign dignitaries.

The cricketer-turned-politician was disqualified by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in October last year for not sharing details of the sales. The top electoral body later filed a complaint with the district court to punish him, under criminal laws, for selling the gifts he had received as prime minister of the country.

Mr Khan was ousted from power in April last year after losing a no-confidence vote, becoming the first Pakistani prime minister to be voted out by the National Assembly.

Box Office: Zwigato Witnesses "Upward Trend" At Rs 62 Lakh On Day 2

Zwigato Box Office Collection Day 2: Kapil Sharma's Film Witnesses 'Upward Trend' At Rs 62 Lakh

Zwigato, directed by Nandita Das, has seen a rise in its box office earnings after a rather dull start. As per Bollywood trade analyst Taran Adarsh, the film saw a jump of over 44% at the box office. However, he added that the total earnings remained low. In his tweet, he said: “#Zwigato witnesses an upward trend on Day 2 [+44.19%], but the 2-day total remains very low due to its biz on Day 1… Biz needs to have a miraculous turnaround/jump on Day 3 for a respectable weekend total… Fri 43 lacs, Sat 62 lacs. Total: ₹ 1.05 cr. #India biz.” He attached the data to a still from the film featuring lead actor Kapil Sharma.

On its opening day, as per Taran Adarsh, Zwigato only earned ₹42 lahks. He said on Twitter: “Released at limited screens [409] and shows, Zwigato puts up a dull score on Day 1… The word of mouth is positive, but it needs to convert into footfalls over the weekend… Fri ₹ 42 lakh India biz.”

Kapil Sharma’s Zwigato clashed with Rani Mukerji’s Mrs. Chatterjee Vs Norway at the box office on its release day (March 17).

Despite the modest earnings, the Kapil Sharma film has impressed critics. NDTV’s Saibal Chatterjee said, “The male protagonist is Manas Mahto (Kapil Sharma cast in a role that one would hardly believe is cut out for him), a food delivery boy who strays into the profession after losing the job of a factory floor supervisor. His soul-crushing routine hinges on numbers, timings, and ratings that, as Manas laments, has reduced him to a machine.”

Speaking about his character, Kapil Sharma said that he deeply resonated with Manas Mahto. He said: “I used to work at Coca-Cola. We all do small jobs here and there when we first come to Mumbai. The product was transported in trucks. There were no apps back then. But, when Nandita ma’am came to me and told me what all difficulties delivery guys face, I could relate to that story a lot.”

The film, which also features Shahana Goswami, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, Busan International Film Festival and the International Film Festival of Kerala ahead of its theatre release.

EOC activated following mass fish deaths in Australia

The NSW Police Force said on Sunday that the massive fish deaths are believed to be attributed to hypoxic blackwater, a naturally occurring phenomenon that causes extremely low dissolved oxygen levels, Xinhua news agency reported.

EOC activated following mass fish deaths in Australia

Sydney: An emergency operations centre has been activated in Menindee, a small town in the far west of Australia’s New South Wales (NSW), to facilitate multi-agency operations, after millions of native fish were found floating down the Darling river.

The NSW Police Force said on Sunday that the massive fish deaths are believed to be attributed to hypoxic blackwater, a naturally occurring phenomenon that causes extremely low dissolved oxygen levels, Xinhua news agency reported.

“The scale of this event has been exacerbated by recent hot weather and significantly increased number of fish in the system as floodwaters recede,” the police noted.

According to the police statement, authorities are continuing to release higher-quality water to boost dissolved oxygen levels in this area, while the emergency operations center (EOC) was established to ensure fresh and clean water supply as well as to coordinate the removal and disposal of fish.

NSW Police Force Assistant Commissioner Brett Greentree, who oversees the centre, pointed out that numerous agencies are already on the ground in the area with more on the way to conduct and support operational activities.

“Significant planning, including risk assessments, is already underway for clean-up efforts, which will include the removal of as many of the dead fish as possible, prioritising the immediate areas around Menindee, as well as other areas deemed high-risk in terms of water supply,” Greentree said.

“While this will require specialised skills and equipment, experts in the EOC have already identified suitable contractors, and it is expected work will commence this week,” he added.

On Friday, the NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) confirmed on social media that the agency is aware of a developing large-scale fish death event on the Lower Darling-Baaka below Menindee Main Weir through to Weir 32, adjacent to the Menindee township.

“It is estimated that millions of fish, predominantly Bony Herring (Bony Bream) have been affected, as well as smaller number of other large-bodied species such as Murray Cod, Golden Perch, Silver Perch and Carp,” said the department.

Cameron Lay, Director of freshwater environments at NSW DPI, told local media that the situation is “very distressing”.

Iran's security chief in Iraq after Saudi détente, UAE talks

Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani (L) meets with his Iraqi counterpart, Qassim al-Araji, upon arrival at Baghdad airport on March 19, 2023.

The secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) has traveled to Baghdad to hold talks with Iraqi officials and sign a joint security cooperation document, following his landmark trips to China and the United Arab Emirates.

Heading a delegation, Ali Shamkhani was welcomed by his Iraqi counterpart, Qassim al-Araji, at Baghdad airport on Sunday.

He also paid a visit to the site where Iran’s legendary anti-terror commander Gen. Qassem Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the second-in-command of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), were assassinated by the US three years ago.

Shamkhani is expected to meet with top Iraqi political and economic officials and sign a joint security cooperation document that has been discussed for several months.

The signing of the document, which reinforces mutual responsibility and commitment with the aim of protecting good neighborliness and securing common borders, plays a key role in ending the illegal presence of armed counter-revolutionary elements and those affiliated with the Israeli regime in Iran’s northwestern borders.

Shamkhani recently represented Iran in the China-hosted talks that led to the restoration of relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia after seven years of estrangement.

He also visited the UAE upon an invitation by Emirati National Security Adviser Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed al-Nahyan.

S Sreesanth Opens Up On IPL 'Slapgate' Row Involving Harbhajan Singh

In the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008, an infamous incident hogged liemight all over the world. Then India teammates Harbhajan Singh and S Sreesanth, playing for opposing teams in the IPL, were involved in one of the biggest controversies to hit the tournament. Certain media reports claimed that Sreesanth — playing for Kings XI Punjab — was allegedly slapped by Mumbai Indians star Harbhajan Singh. Subsequently, the off-spinner received a lengthy ban. Though a lot has been listened and discussed about it till date, Sreesanth has cleared more air after 14 years of the incident.

“We have always been friends. That was just a misunderstanding and the media made a big noise out of it. I will just say that Bhajji pa has supported me from the beginning in every way, including recently with commentary tips. He has supported me and helped me a lot and I am very thankful to him. There is that song, ‘Tere jaisa yaar kaha’, that is my relationship with him,” said Sreesanth on Sports Yaari.

Having already admitted his mistake and apologised for the unruly incident, Harbhajan Singh last year had opened up on the infamous incident once again. This time in the presence of Sreesanth.

The duo appeared on ‘Pitch-Ed Battles with Vikram Sathaye’ on Glance Live Fest where Harbhajan spoke about the embarrassment both him and Sreesanth had to go through after the incident.

“Whatever happened in that IPL match, it was wrong. From my side it was wrong. I made a mistake by doing that. Because of it my colleague, my own teammate had to face embarrassment. I had to face the embarrassment that I had done a thing like this,” said the former India spinner.

India's Forex Kitty Drops By USD 2.39 Billion To USD 560 Billion: RBI

India's Forex Kitty Drops By USD 2.39 Billion To USD 560 Billion: RBI

India’s forex reserves fell by USD 2.39 billion to a three-month low of USD 560.003 billion

Mumbai:

The country’s forex reserves fell by USD 2.39 billion to a three-month low of USD 560.003 billion for the week to March 10, the Reserve Bank said in its latest weekly data release.

In the week to March 3, the reserves rose by USD 1.46 billion and stood at USD 562.40 billion.

On an annualised basis, the RBI said, the reserves are down by USD 47.31 billion during the week under review while on a fiscal year basis, the same plunged by USD 62.23 billion.

With this erosion, the forex kitty is at the lowest since early-December, according to the weekly statistical supplement released by the RBI on Friday.

The loss in the reserves is due to the revaluation of the foreign currency assets, which are the largest component of the forex kitty, to the tune of USD 2.2 billion to USD 494.86 billion for the week to March 10.

On a year-on-year basis, the value of foreign currency assets fell by USD 45.86 billion and from a fiscal year perspective, they lost USD 59.49 billion.

Expressed in dollar terms, foreign currency assets include the effect of appreciation or depreciation of the non-US units like the euro, the pound and the yen held in the foreign exchange reserves.

The reserve losses are primarily due to the RBI selling dollars to stem the rupee volatility in the spot and forwards market to prevent runaway moves in the exchange rate.

Last week, the rupee stood ground and lost just 10 basis points against the dollar and the currency traded in the 81.61-82.29 range. The rupee ended at 82.55 on Friday.

The country’s gold reserves and SDR holdings too saw a reduction in the week under review with both reserves falling USD 110 million and USD 53 million, respectively. The gold reserves and SDR holdings stand at USD 41.92 billion and USD 18.12 billion, respectively.

The country’s reserve position in the IMF also fell by USD11 million, taking it to USD 5.1 billion.

The reserves have been falling from the peak as the rupee has been under pressure and the monetary authority has been taking measures to defend the rupee from extreme volatility. In 2022, the cost of defending a falling rupee was over USD 115 billion of the reserves.

The worst drop was in the week to February 10 when the reserves plunged by a steep USD 8.32 billion to USD 566.95 billion.

In October 2021, the forex kitty had reached an all-time high of USD 645 billion.
