Hyderabad FC coach Singto aims to outperform ex-stars in BFC clash

Hyderabad: Hyderabad FC head coach Thangboi Singto has emphasised that he has worked to instill hunger and motivation in his youthful team to outshine two of their former players – Chinglensana Singh Konsham and Nikhil Poojary, now part of Bengaluru FC, when they lock horns against BFC in the Indian Super League clash at Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru on Saturday.

India senior team players Chinglensana and Poojary were integral part in winning the ISL title in 2022 and were two of many players that left the former champions in the recent January transfer window. “On the pitch both (Chinglensana and Poojary) have been very professional for Hyderabad but at the moment they are wearing BFC’s jersey and HFC will fight against them to win the game,” Singto asserted.

In the previous meeting between the two sides, the game ended in a 1-1 scoreline at the Gachibowli. Since then a lot has changed for both sides. Bengaluru have changed their head coach with Gerard Zaragoza taking charge of the side after Simon Grayson’s sacking in the middle of the season.

However, fortunes haven’t changed for BFC under the Spaniard, who are struggling at the 10th place in the league standings. But Singto doesn’t rate the home side lower despite their underwhelming season so far, stating, “Presently, Bengaluru are not at their best. But they are still fighting and aiming for the best possible finish of the season given they have some of the top players.”

“Also, the atmosphere in the Kanteerava will play a big factor for the home side as we expect a tough challenge from them,” he added. The challenge is twice tougher for the Nizams with the absence of midfielder and skipper Joao Victor and defender Alex Saji, who were sent off in the previous game against East Bengal.

Absence of Joao is immense, who brings a lot of experience and is crucial when it comes to build-up play. Now the question remains: without Joao and Alex, what starting eleven will HFC field against The Blues?

But having played without the skipper in the away game against Mohun Bagan Super Giant recently, Lalchhanhima Sailo, who plays as a deep lying midfielder alongside Joao stressed the Hyderabad players have learned their lessons from the clash at the Salt Lake and won’t repeat the past mistakes upon facing Bengaluru.

New Delhi: Defending champions Chennai Super Kings will take on Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2024 IPL season-opener in Chennai on March 22, the BCCI announced Thursday while unveiling the schedule for only the first 17 days of the popular T20 league.

As per the format, 10 teams are divided into two groups of five.

In the group stage, each team plays 14 games facing the other four sides in their group two times each (home and away basis, four teams in the other group once, and the remaining team two times.

After opting out of Ranji Trophy due to back pain, NCA says Shreyas Iyer is fit: Report

According to a report in The Indian Express, Nitin Patel, the head of sports science and medicine at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, confirmed in an email to selectors that Iyer has ‘no new injury’ and is ‘fit’.

After opting out of Ranji Trophy due to back pain, NCA says Shreyas Iyer is fit: Report

New Delhi: Shreyas Iyer, who was omitted from India’s squad for the last three Tests against England, had opted out of Mumbai’s upcoming Ranji Trophy quarterfinal against Baroda, starting on Friday at the BKC Ground, due to back pain.

But a report in The Indian Express says Nitin Patel, the head of sports science and medicine at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, confirmed in an email to selectors, that Iyer has ‘no fresh injury’ and that he was ‘fit’.

“Shreyas Iyer was fit and available for selection as per the handover report of the Indian team after the 2nd Test match against England. There are currently no fresh injuries reported as well after his departure from Team India,” wrote Patel in the email to the selection committee, as cited in the report.

Iyer hadn’t left a mark in the first two Tests against England, making scores of 35 and 13 in Hyderabad, followed by scoring 27 and 29 in Visakhapatnam. In his last seven Test matches, he has amassed only 187 runs at an average of 17, with a top score of just 35.

In Ranji Trophy, Iyer had made 48 in Mumbai’s ten-wicket win over Andhra as preparation for the England Test series. But after the omission from the Test squad, he didn’t play the last round of the competition.

“Iyer had complained of back spasms following the second Test in Visakhapatnam. “The national selectors, after taking inputs from the BCCI medical team, told Shreyas to play Ranji Trophy so that his back gets used to the strain of batting and being on the field for an extended period of time,” the report further said.

The confusion around Iyer’s status comes after Jay Shah, the BCCI Secretary, had warned the centrally-contracted and India ‘A’ cricketers over non-participation in domestic cricket, citing that a move like that from them to prioritize IPL over domestic cricket, would have ‘severe implications’.

“However, there is a trend that has started to emerge and is a cause for concern. Some players have begun prioritising the IPL over domestic cricket, a shift that was not anticipated. Domestic cricket has always been the foundation upon which Indian cricket stands, and it has never been undervalued in our vision for the sport.

“It is essential to recognise that domestic cricket forms the backbone of Indian cricket and serves as the feeder line to Team India. Our vision for Indian cricket has been clear from the outset – every cricketer aspiring to play for India must prove themselves in domestic cricket. Performance in domestic tournaments remains a critical yardstick for selection, and non-participation in domestic cricket will carry severe implications,” Shah had said.

Watch: Sachin Tendulkar plays ‘Gully Cricket’ in Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar: Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar on Thursday shared glimpse of him playing ‘gully cricket’ during his visit to Jammu and Kashmir.

Tendulkar took to his official X (formerly Twitter) account to share a short clip of him playing cricket with the locals, and captioned it: “Cricket & Kashmir: A MATCH in HEAVEN!”

In the video, it can be seen Sachin was travelling with his family but the cricket maestro stopped his car to hit some shots in between the snowy mountain. The 50-year-old did not hesitate to loft the ball over the head of the bowler and play a few drive shots.

After the short cricket session, Sachin clicked a few selfies with the local cricket fans who were playing on the road. To entertain the people, he also played some unorthodox shots.

Earlier during his visit to Jammu and Kashmir, the Master Blaster visited a cricket bat manufacturing factory. Kashmiri willow bats are renowned all over the world.

While sharing the video of his visit to the cricket bat factory, he captioned: “The first bat given to me was by my sister and it was a Kashmir willow bat. Ab main yahan hoon to Kashmir willow ko to milna banta hai! P.S: An interesting fact; some of my favourite bats had only about 5-6 grains. How many grains do your bats have?”

The cricket legend also recollected the time his sister had gifted him a Kashmir willow bat.

Mohammed Shami ruled out of IPL, to undergo ankle surgery

Mohammed Shami ruled out of IPL, to undergo ankle surgery

New Delhi: Senior pacer Mohammed Shami has been ruled out of next month’s Indian Premier League owing to a left ankle injury, for which he will undergo a surgery in the UK, a BCCI source told PTI on Thursday.

The 33-year-old, who is not part of the ongoing Test series against England, last played for India in the ODI World Cup final against Australia in November.

“Shami was in London in last week of January to take special ankle injections and he was told that after three weeks, he can start light running and take it from thereon.

“But the injection hasn’t worked and now the only option left is surgery. He will shortly leave for UK for surgery. IPL seems out of question,” a senior BCCI source said on the condition of anonymity.

Shami, who was one of the architects of India’s stupendous World Cup campaign with 24 wickets, played through pain as he had problems with his landing but didn’t let it affect his performance.

Shami, who was recently conferred with the Arjuna Award, has 229 Test, 195 ODI and 24 T20 wickets in his decade-long career.

The development raises a question mark about the injury rehabilitation management programme planned by the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for Shami.

Now it is highly unlikely that the pace bowling artist would be able to make a comeback before India’s Test matches at home against Bangladesh and New Zealand (October November).

His target could be the marquee away series against Australia.

People in the know of things believe that the NCA’s conservative line of thinking has not worked in Shami’s case.

“Shami should have gone directly for surgery and that should have been NCA’s call. Just two months of rest and injections wouldn’t have worked well and that’s what has happened. He is an asset and the Indian team would need him in Australia,” the source said.

Dubai Tennis Championships: Coco Gauff stages comeback, secures quarterfinal spot

Dubai Tennis Championships: Coco Gauff stages comeback, secures quarterfinal spot

Dubai: World no. 3 American Coco Gauff fought back from a set down to seal a nail-biting three-set 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over the Czech Republic’s Karolina Pliskovato to claim a quarterfinal spot at the Dubai Tennis Championships.

The reigning US Open champion Gauff collected the win over Pliskova after 1 hour and 53 minutes of play, edging ahead 2-1 in their head-to-head.

With several seeds already dispatched by lesser-ranked opponents at this week’s WTA 1000 event, Gauff narrowly avoided becoming the latest big-name casualty as she moved into the quarterfinals after a rollercoaster battle that kept fans fixed to the edge of their seats.

Gauff will next Anna Kalinskaya, who defeated 2022 Dubai champion and world No. 9 Jelena Ostapenka, 6-4, 7-5, earlier on Wednesday.

In other action, World No1 Iga Swiatek saw off No15 seed and two-time former champion Elina Svitolina in the third round on Wednesday night. The Pole star has now won 25 of her last 26 matches and is on a 13-match winning streak against Top 20 players.

Taking her winning streak in the Middle East this month to six successive matches, Swiatek beat her Ukrainian opponent in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 to progress to the quarterfinals where she now faces Zheng Qinwen of China.

World No. 7 Zheng booked her place in the last eight by defeating Anastasia Potapova in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. She has now won 26 of her last 27 matches against players outside the Top 20 with the sole loss in that time coming last week to Leylah Fernandez.

While Svitolina secured back-to-back titles here in 2017 and 2018, Swiatek, Zheng and the other six players remaining in the tournament — Coco Gauff, Sorana Cirstea, Marketa Vondrousova, Elena Rybakina, Jasmine Paolini, and Anna Kalinskaya — are all gunning for a maiden title.

Liverpool extends lead to four points with victory over Luton

Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, Luis Diaz, and Harvey Elliott’s goals further solidified Liverpool’s lead at the top of the table, extending their advantage to four points over second-place Manchester City

Liverpool extends lead to four points with victory over Luton

Liverpool: Liverpool produced a second-half fightback to beat Luton Town 4-1 in the Premier League at Anfield late on Wednesday night.

Goals from Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, Luis Diaz and Harvey Elliott consolidated Liverpool’s position at the top of the table, as they move four points clear of second-place Manchester City.

Despite a strong start from Liverpool, it was Luton who took the lead after 12 minutes as Ogbene headed in from close range after Tahith Chong’s strike was parried by Caoimhin Kelleher and the rebound fell kindly to Ogbene.

Liverpool started the second half on the front foot with Diaz having two shots blocked. And the pressure eventually told as Van Dijk brought the hosts level with a header past Thomas Kaminski from Alexis Mac Allister’s corner in the 56th minute, Premier League reports.

Mac Allister was the provider again when his cross was flicked in by Gakpo. There were just 125 seconds between the two Liverpool goals. Van Dijk went close to scoring a second goal from another corner, but this time Kaminski was able to save his header.

Liverpool then gave themselves breathing space after Diaz showed great composure to dribble past Teden Mengi before firing past Kaminski. The goal meant Liverpool are the first team in Europe’s top five leagues to have five players score 10 or more goals as Diaz joined Salah, Jota, Nunez and Gakpo in double digits.

Klopp then handed late minutes to teenagers Jayden Danns and James McConnell. And Elliott wrapped up the victory in the 90th minute as he smashed a loose ball inside the box into the top-left corner, leaving Kaminski no chance.

Liverpool have now recovered 22 points from losing positions in the Premier League this season, more than any other side, and their joint-most in a single campaign in the competition since 2008/09 as they secured a third-straight league win.

Champions League: Porto secures dramatic victory over Arsenal with Galeno’s late goal

On Wednesday night, Galeno’s superb goal granted the Portuguese team an edge heading into the second leg at Emirates Stadium.

Champions League: Porto secures dramatic victory over Arsenal with Galeno’s late goal

Porto: Arsenal’s return to the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League did not go to plan after a strike from Galeno in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time gave Porto a 1-0 win in the first leg of their last-16 tie.

Galeno scored a brilliant goal on Wednesday night to give the Portuguese team the advantage ahead of the second leg at Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal struggled to create chances like they have in recent matches as they failed to register a shot on target for the first time this season.

The first real clear-cut chance of the night fell to the hosts, with Galeno thundering a shot onto the post and then putting the rebound narrowly wide with 21 minutes gone.

Arsenal’s potent front line was kept quiet by some disciplined Porto defending, and the Gunners failed to carve out an opening until centre-back William Saliba headed wide from Bukayo Saka’s corner in the 35th minute.

The second half continued in a similar vein, with Porto frustrating the Arsenal attack despite the Gunners pressing higher up the pitch. Their clearest sight of goal came when defender Gabriel headed a Declan Rice free-kick over the bar as full time approached.

That was swiftly followed by the evening’s most dramatic moment, however, as Galeno made amends for his earlier miss by bending in a superb long-range, right-footed effort to send the home fans wild.

In the end, Arsenal were unable to muster a single shot on target during the entire match. The result leaves the tie beautifully poised for what should be a fascinating second leg in London in just under three weeks’ time.

“I think the credit for that goal goes to the whole team, for what they did in the 90 minutes. We played well, we defended well, we left all our energy on the pitch. Regarding the goal, when the opportunity arose, I didn’t hesitate. I am very happy. We will try to replicate in London what we achieved here. We will try to stay solid and give our best, as we always do,” Galeno said after the match.
