Ashwin terms his spell during second England Test in Vizag as one of his best, offers his verdict on ‘Bazball’

England was chasing a target of 398 in the second Test in Visakhapatnam, when Ashwin chipped in with three wickets to set up India’s victory.

Ashwin terms his spell during second England Test in Vizag as one of his best, offers his verdict on ‘Bazball’

New Delhi: After India’s 4-1 victory in the home Test series against England, India offspinner Ravichandran Ashwin shared his views on the Bazball phenomenon and reflected on his crucial spell in the second Test at Visakhapatnam, in which he took three wickets, calling it as one of the best spells of his life.

The series began with England taking a 28-run win in Hyderabad, a result that highlighted the merits of England’s new-age ‘Bazball’ approach to Test cricket under their head coach Brendon McCullum. However, India took control of the proceedings from there, securing victories in the remaining four Tests and raising questions over the visiting team’s strategy.

In his latest Youtube video, Ashwin spoke at length about the ‘Bazball Tour of India’, dissecting England’s approach.

“There were many times in this series when I thought, if this was against Australia instead of England, we could have seen two draws instead of results,” Ashwin said as quoted by ICC.

“At least one, because of the flatter cricket pitches… But because of this new English approach, they put us under pressure in several Tests.” “The pressure was because – them playing three sessions could be equal to us playing five-six sessions in terms of runs scored, and so every match was bound to go for a result. So it was always on my mind that we would have to try something different,” he added.

The Hyderabad Test was Ashwin’s first against England since they adopted the aggressive, attacking and positive Bazball tactics nearly two years ago.

“The one thing that I personally understood after the first Test is that Bazball is not just aggressive cricket. It is defenceless cricket,” said Ashwin.

“They are not going to play a defensive shot at all. They are going to get out if they play defence. To my surprise, Joe Root also agreed to their game plan. Because if you take world cricket’s best defence rankings, Joe Root is an easy number one on that list against spin. He also bought into their approach,” he added.

England was chasing a target of 398 in the second Test in Visakhapatnam, when Ashwin chipped in with three wickets to set up India’s victory.

“I backed myself to bowl at the stumps, and at the right time, Kona [Srikar] Bharat took a catch, just like [Wriddhiman] Saha took the catch of Matthew Wade in the Bangalore Test [in 2017],” said Ashwin.

“After that, positive vibes surrounded the place. The next morning, I was able to knock over Joe Root and Ollie Pope. One of the crucial morning spells and one of the best spells I have bowled in my life so far.” “Tom Hartley was my potential 500th wicket, but then the review got turned down. And James Anderson with the glove again, the ball flew over slip. Some things are meant to be, and some things are not. I could have gotten five there, but all I could was three, but still one of the outstanding spells I have bowled, in my opinion,” he concluded.

The spin maestro finished the series as the top wicket-taker with 26 scalps in 10 innings, averaging 24.80 which included two five-wicket hauls in Ranchi, and Dharamsala, where he played his 100th Test. He also scored 116 crucial runs with the bat. (ANI)

Virat Kohli officially ruled out of T20 World Cup?

Virat Kohli’s participation in the World Cup is still an uncertainty and if reports are to be believed, he could face the axe.

Virat Kohli officially ruled out of T20 World Cup?

Virat Kohli

Hyderabad: Although Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma had not played any T20Is for over a year before the three-match series against Afghanistan earlier this year, both the star batters made a surprising comeback into the squad for the series.

Playing as captain, Rohit Sharma appeared in all three games and impressed in the series with a scintillating hundred in the last game despite the long break from the format, even as India won the series 3-0.

On the other hand, Virat Kohli missed the series opener and joined the team for the second and third matches in which he scored 29 and 0 respectively.

While Rohit’s participation in the T20 World Cup has already been confirmed by BCCI secretary Jay Shah, Virat Kohli’s selection in the team has not been confirmed so far.

His participation in the World Cup is still an uncertainty and if reports are to be believed, Virat Kohli could still face the axe.

According to a report on The Telegraph, the national selectors and the team management are ready to take some harsh decisions ahead of the tournament. The BCCI doesn’t want to get involved in this and has left it to the selection committee and the team management to take a cal.

“It remains a very delicate matter and not many are willing to get involved,” the report stated. Kohli played his last T20I series against Afghanistan in January where he scored 29 & 0 in two matches.

It is understood that chief selector Ajit Agarkar had a chat with Virat before the series regarding the change in the T20I approach that was implemented in the T20I series against Afghans.

The West Indies’ slow wickets are also seen to be an unsuitable surface for him. Nothing has been suggested regarding a change in plans despite the selectors’ prolonged flirting with the subject.

With selection hanging on Agarkar, Virat will have to perform exceedingly well in the upcoming Indian Premier League. It will once more be up to Agarkar to take up the cause and persuade Kohli that he needs to create room for the next generation.

India have been kept in Group A alongside Pakistan, USA and Canada. India will start their campaign against Canada on June 5.

New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday confirmed that star India pacer Mohammed Shami will miss the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 with Gujarat Titans (GT).

In an official statement, BCCI stated that Shami is currently monitored by the BCCI medical team after going through surgery on his Achilles tendon in February.

“The fast bowler successfully underwent surgery on February 26th, 2024, for his right heel problem. He is currently being monitored by the BCCI medical team and is ruled out of the upcoming TATA IPL 2024,” BCCI stated on Shami.

Shami missed the home T20I series against Australia following the ICC World Cup last year, and he was ruled out of the entire South Africa tour. He also missed the Afghanistan series. Following that, he also missed the five-match Test series against England.

The 33-year-old did not take part in the recently concluded five-match Test series against England. He last represented India in the ODI World Cup final against Australia in November. The senior pacer finished as the tournament’s highest wicket-taker and dismissed 24 batters in only 7 matches.

On the other hand, BCCI also updated Prasidh Krishna’s fitness and stated that he will soon start his rehab at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) after going through surgery on his left proximal quadriceps tendon.

“The fast bowler underwent surgery on February 23rd, 2024, on his left proximal quadriceps tendon. He is currently being monitored by the BCCI Medical Team and will resume rehab at the National Cricket Academy soon. He will not be able to take part in the upcoming TATA IPL 2024,” BCCI on Krishna.

On Tuesday, BCCI gave a major update on Rishabh Pant’s recovery from injury and said that the wicketkeeper batter has been declared fit to take part in the upcoming IPL 2024. WPL: Gujarat Giants dash UP Warriorz’s knockout hopes

Sixteen-year-old pacer Shabnam Shakil shines with 3/11 to negate Deepti Sharma’s brilliance as Gujarat Giants defeated UP Warriorz by eight runs in the Women’s Premier League here on Monday.

WPL: Gujarat Giants dash UP Warriorz’s knockout hopes

Gujarat Giants captain Beth Mooney plays a shot during the WPL match.

New Delhi: Sixteen-year-old pacer Shabnam Shakil announced her arrival on the big stage with brilliant figures of 3/11 to negate Deepti Sharma’s brilliance as Gujarat Giants all but dashed UP Warriorz’s hopes of qualifying for the knock-out stages with an eight-run victory in the Women’s Premier League here on Monday.

Warriorz, with a negative net run-rate of -0.371, needed to win to have any chance of qualification but despite Deepti’s unbeaten 88 off 60 balls, Warriorz could only end up with 144 for 5, chasing a target of 153 set by the Giants. India international Deepti smashed nine fours, while her partner Poonam Khemnar scored 36 off as many balls. But the Warriorz had already lost steam after being reduced to 35 for 5 and it was always going to be a catch-up game for Healy’s women.

They ended their eight-game campaign with six points. Even if RCB lose their last game, the Bengaluru side would still enjoy a better net run-rate unless they lose by a massive margin. Shabnam, playing only her second game of the season, removed seasoned campaigners Alyssa Healy, Chamari Athapaththu and her former India U-19 teammate Shweta Sehrawat to dash any hopes that Warriorz harboured of finishing in the top three.

Bowling with a high-arm action and pronounced jump, the neat six-foot-tall girl got extra bounce and the subtle movement off the seam also did work wonders for her. Earlier, UP Warriorz’s spin troika of Sophie Ecclestone, Deepti Sharma and Rajeswari Gayakwad made life miserable for wooden spooners Gujarat Giants before Beth Mooney’s unbeaten 74 gave them some breathing space with a total of 152 for 8. Young Indian fielders in the Warriorz side committed basic mistakes in catching and holding fort in the deep, which cost the team an extra 25 runs.

Ecclestone (3/38 in 4 overs), Deepti (2/22 in 4 overs) and Gayakwad (1/28 in 4 overs) tightened the noose on the Giants after Mooney and Wolvaardt (43 off 30 balls) added 60 in 7.5 overs to lay a solid foundation. However things went haywire from thereon for the Giants as once Wolvardt was dismissed, Ecclestone and Deepti choked the run-flow and got the valuable wickets in the process. Gujarat’s Indian talent has been below par, and once again the likes of Bharati Fulmali, Dayalan Hemlatha and Tanuja Kanwer flattered to deceive with poor game sense and shot selection that left a lot to be desired.

With Phoebe Litchfield and Ashleigh Gardner struggling this season, there has been a lot of pressure on Wolvardt and Mooney. Mooney, for a better part of her knock, scored at a run-a-ball and then the profligacy of the UP Warriorz fielders helped her get some extra boundaries. The likes of Shweta Sehrawat, Poonam Khemnar and Saima Thakor are still not ready for top-flight cricket and some distance away from being decent fielders for this level.

Brief Scores: Gujarat Giants 152/8 (Beth Mooney 74, Laura Wolvaardt 43; Sophie Ecclestone 3/38) bt UP Warriorz 144/5 (Deepti Sharma 88 no; Shabnam MD 3/11).
