Mumbai clinch Ranji Trophy for 42nd time, beat Vidarbha by 169 runs in final

Mumbai: Domestic heavyweights Mumbai ended their eight-year barren run to lift a record-extending 42nd Ranji Trophy title here on Thursday, beating a resolute Vidarbha by 169 runs on the fifth and final day of a thoroughly engrossing summit clash.

The fate of the final — Mumbai’s 48th in the 90 years of the tournament’s history — here at the iconic Wankhede Stadium was sealed when the hosts set a 538-run target for the visiting team.

Vidarbha captain Akshay Wadkar (102) and the unheralded Harsh Dubey (65) kept Mumbai at bay for the entire first session on the last day after Vidarbha resumed on 248 for five, needing another 290 runs to win.

The team was eventually bowled out for 368 in a contest that ebbed and flowed with Vidarbha frustrating the hosts for long periods of play on the last two days.

Wadkar led the fight for his side with his first century of the year which also helped him cross the 600-run mark this season. Dubey brought up only the second fifty of his first-class career.

Together, they forged the longest stand of the innings, consuming 255 balls in 194 minutes from day four until a little after the resumption of the second session on the final day.

Wadkar fell shortly after play resumed — leg before off Tanush Kotian (4/95) — and once the pair was broken, it all ended in a jiffy for the visitors who have now lost the Ranji Trophy final for a third time after winning two titles.

Tushar Deshpande continued to employ the short ball to dismiss Dubey (65 off 128 balls, 5 x4s, 2x6s) and Aditya Sarwate, who missed the majority of the game owing to a back spasm.

While Kotian cleaned up Yash Thakur (6) for his fourth wicket, Dhawal Kulkarni signed off from all forms of cricket with the final wicket of the game in the form of Umesh Yadav for a fairytale ending.

Mumbai skipper Ajinkya Rahane praised Vidarbha for their gritty display before lifting the trophy and rightly so.

For a team which paid a heavy price for a poor first-innings score — 105 to concede a 119-run lead in response to Mumbai’s 224 — Vidarbha showed resilience to gave a fine account of themselves in the second innings.

Mumbai began the final day hoping to break the sixth-wicket stand between Wadkar and Dubey early but their wait only extended since the batters overcame all challenges that the hosts threw at them.

With the pace bowlers not being able to trouble the batters, Mumbai hopes were pinned on their spinners but their own error cost Rahane’s side early on.
Kotian appealed for a bat-pad catch at silly point against Dubey in the 101st over of the innings but the appeal was turned down.

In a show of desperation, Mumbai went for the DRS intervention which confirmed the ball had not grazed the bat and was also going to miss the leg stump.
Kotian then found an outside edge off Wadkar’s bat which fell close to Rahane.

Mumbai’s frustration was evident when Kulkarni held his ground at the end of his follow through after being declined a leg-before appeal against Dubey.
Kulkarni made some gestures and even exchanged a few words with the umpire but replays confirmed that the ball had pitched outside the leg-stump.
Dubey was also lucky when Kotian pinned him in front of the wickets but Mumbai could not get it overturned since they had no reviews left.

Indian Wells: Holger Rune stages epic comeback to upset Fritz

Indian Wells: Seventh seed Holger Rune showcased his resilience and tenacity as he fought back from the brink of defeat to stun home favourite Taylor Fritz 2-6, 7-6(2), 6-3 to reach his fifth ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final at the Paribas Open.

The young Danish sensation saved a match point in a gripping encounter that left fans at Indian Wells on the edge of their seats.

Despite a slow start and a barrage of unforced errors in the opening set, Rune refused to buckle under pressure. With Fritz dominating the court with his first-strike tennis, Rune dug deep, staying focused and determined.

Facing a daunting match point at 4-5 in the second set, Rune summoned all his mental strength and delivered a clutch performance, capitalizing on a missed return from Fritz to stay alive in the contest. Energized by his newfound momentum, Rune seized control of the match, pushing Fritz to the limit with his aggressive baseline play.

The decider saw Rune maintain his aggressive stance, relentlessly attacking Fritz’s second serve. In a pivotal moment, he secured the decisive break to surge ahead, claiming victory and sending shockwaves through the tournament.

Speaking after his remarkable comeback, Rune expressed his elation at overcoming adversity and praised his opponent’s formidable game. Looking ahead to his quarter-final clash against fourth seed Daniil Medvedev, Rune remained unfazed, emphasizing his attacking mindset and determination to take on any challenge.

“It was crazy. Really just stayed in the moment, kept fighting,” Rune said in his on-court interview. “Tried to play from point to point and I thought I managed to raise my level quite amazingly at the end of the second set.”

The World No. 7 in the PIF ATP Rankings brought the Indian Wells crowd alive with his energy and shotmaking as he levelled his Lexus ATP head-to-head series with Fritz at 1-1.

“He was controlling it from the first set and a long time of the second set as well. I’m just happy that I kept fighting and kept believing that I was going to find my rhythm at some point,” said Rune, who hit 29 winners.

Rune will next meet fourth seed and last year’s finalist Daniil Medvedev in the quarters, which will mark the Dane’s first Masters 1000 quarter-final appearance outside of Europe. The pair split their first two meetings, which both were on clay.

New Delhi: The big-hitting Shafali Verma led the way with a blazing 37-ball 71 as a dominant Delhi Capitals secured direct qualification into the final of the Women’s Premier League with a seven-wicket hammering of Gujarat Giants here on Wednesday.

Table-toppers Delhi Capitals entered the game looking to bag a direct spot in the final and once their bowlers restricted Giants to 126 for nine with a disciplined show at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, the hosts inched closer to realising their goal. In the final on Sunday, the Capitals will play the winner of the eliminator between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore.

As she is wont to, Shafali launched into a furry of boundaries, including hitting as many as five sixes and seven fours, to help her side complete the chase of 127 without much ado. DC finished the game with as many as 41 balls remaining. Shafali reached her fifty in just 28 balls. She got to the landmark with a four over extra cover off Mannat Kashyap. The duo of Shafali and Jemimah Rodrigues (38 not out) then bludgeoned Meghna Singh for 20 runs, and Ashleigh Gardner was also carted for 28 runs in two overs.

Earlier, Delhi Capitals’ bowlers produced a fine effort to restrict Gujarat Giants to a modest total. If it was not for Bharati Fulmali’s 36-ball 42 and Kathryn Bryce’s unbeaten 28, the Giants would have finished with a much lower total. South African veteran Marizanne Kapp led the way with fine figures of 2/17 in four overs, bowling beautifully in the powerplay, while there were also two wickets apiece for Shikha Pandey and Minnu Mani.

Gugarat Giants’ decision to bat first on winning the toss backfired as they found themselves in a spot of bother at 12/2 in the fourth over, including losing the big wicket of skipper Beth Mooney for a duck to South African all-rounder Kapp in the match’s very first over. Mooney shaped up to flick a length delivery on the leg stump but the ball brushed past her thigh pad before going on to disturb the leg and middle stump.

Dayalan Hemalatha (4) was the next batter to depart, bowled by Jess Jonassen as Delhi Capitals rejoiced the early success. Another setback awaited the Giants as they lost Laura Wolvaardt (7), the successful bowler being Kapp again as the visitors slumped to 16 for three in the beginning of the fifth over. Unable to force the pace, Wolvaardt was under pressure and succumbed in the face of some disciplined bowling by Kapp.

Experienced Australian player Ashleigh Gardner (12) and Phoebe Litchfield (21) looked to steady the innings but having added 23 runs for the fourth wicket, the former perished to a lovely flighted delivery from off-spinner Mani.

The Giants were tottering at 39 for four in the ninth over and the situation became worse for them when Radha Yadav pulled off a nice catch to send back Litchfield off the bowling of Mani. At 48 for five in the 11th over, the Giants were in a hopeless situation but Fulmali and Kathryn Bryce put on 68 runs to help the side cross 120 and give their bowlers something to defend.

Brief Scores: Gujarat Giants 126/9 (Bharti Fulmani 42; Marizanne Kapp 2/17) lost to Delhi Capitals 129/3 (Shafali Verma 71, Jemimah Rodrigues 38 no). PTI

Ambati Rayudu’s ‘Rohit Sharma as CSK captain after MS Dhoni’ remark creates ripples

Hyderabad: With weeks to go for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Mumbai-based franchisee Mumbai Indians’ decision of replacing captain Rohit Sharma with Hardik Pandya is still disappointing fans.

Pandya’s appointment as captain for MI, after a two-year stint with Gujarat Titans, is still the most-talked about topic among IPL fans.

Meanwhile, Ambati Rayudu, who played for both Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, expressed his views on the 17th edition of the IPL. In an interview with News 24, Rayudu put forth an interesting view, and expressed his desire to see Rohit Sharma replace MS Dhoni as CSK captain, should he retire after this year’s IPL.

“I want Rohit Sharma to play for CSK in 2025. I feel he is very much capable of leading the men in yellow,” said Rayudu, who was a member of the trophy-winning CSK team which beat Gujarat Titans in last year’s final.

He also opined that  the Mumbai Indians management replaced Rohit Sharma in a haste and added that the franchisee should have stuck with him captaining for this season, with Pandya, who is returning to the team playing under him.

“Both the Mumbai Indians  and the Gujarat Titans set-ups are very different. Coming from the GT to MI as a captain could be difficult for Pandya,” said Rayudu.

Rohit Sharma is a five-time IPL trophy-winning captain, who won his first championship in his inaugural season as captain.
