Colombo: India captain Rohit Sharma on Tuesday became the sixth batter from his country and 15th overall to complete 10,000 ODI runs.

Rohit achieved the feat during India’s Asia Cup Super 4 contest against Sri Lanka here.

The India skipper hit a six off Sri Lanka’s Kasun Rajitha to complete the milestone in the seventh over of the innings, a day after Virat Kohli became the quickest ever batter to cross 13,000-run landmark in a record 267 ODI innings.

In fact, Rohit completed his 10,000 runs in 241 innings, which is second fastest ever after Kohli did so in 205 innings.

The other Indians in the 10,000-run club are Sachin Tendulkar (18,426 runs), Virat Kohli (13,026), Sourav Ganguly (11,363), Rahul Dravid (10,889) and MS Dhoni (10,773).

As the only player in the history to have hit three double centuries in 50-overs cricket, Rohit also holds the record of most runs in an innings — or the highest individual score — 264 against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens in November 2014.

Rohit recorded his first ODI double ton against Australia in November 2013 when he scored 209. Four years later, he smashed another double ton against Sri Lanka — 208 not out at Mohali in December 2017.

With 30 centuries so far, Rohit is at joint-third with former Australia captain Ricky Ponting for hitting most ODI hundreds.

He is also third in the list of batters with most sixes in the format.

Medvedev defeats Alcaraz, sets up Djokovic rematch in 2023 US Open Final

Medvedev stated, as quoted by ‘usopen’, “I mentioned I had to perform at an 11 out of 10 level. I believe I achieved a 12 out of 10, excluding the third set.”

New York: Daniil Medvedev beat defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, 7-6(3), 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, to advance to his third US Open final, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

“I said I needed to play 11 out of 10. I played 12 out of 10, except the third set,” Medvedev was quested as saying by ‘usopen’.

“That’s the only way (to beat Alcaraz). He’s so young, already two Grand Slams, world No. 1 for many weeks, it’s honestly just pretty unbelievable and I think nobody has done it before him, so to beat him you need to be better than yourself and I managed to do it.”

In a matchup of two superstars, each with their own unique set of preternatural tennis talents, the 2021 New York champion, Medvedev got his calculations just right to neutralize the uber-athletic game of Alcaraz with his own brand of metronomic baseline brilliance. The third seed also leaned on a stellar serving performance that peaked in the second set, when he rattled off three straight love holds.

Medvedev was hanging on at the start, battling through a series of tough holds and saving the only two break points of the first set as Alcaraz flew out of the blocks. But the tide began to turn when Medvedev won 12 straight points on serve late in the set, including a pair of love holds.

The third seed shook off a double fault that made it 3-3 in the tiebreak by hitting two forehand winners in a four-point blitz to close the set.

Medvedev drove home that advantage with an instant break in set two, and he did not lose a point on serve in the set until he harmlessly conceded two in serving out the frame.

The inevitable Alcaraz surge came in set three, which he began with a love hold to signal his intent. Always a fan favorite in New York, Alcaraz enjoyed even more backing in Ashe as he began to launch a comeback bid. The Spaniard was in full flow after scoring his first break of the match to lead 3-1, his balletic movements setting him up to power through the lanky Medvedev’s defenses.

With the volume turned up, Alcaraz eased through the third set and fashioned an opening at 15-40 early in set four, before Mededev began to recalibrate his resistance. Medvedev escaped that game and then scored the crucial break on his second break point of a mammoth, seven-deuce game to move to the brink of victory at 4-2.

Alcaraz attacked the net with abandon down the stretch, serving-and-volleying on the majority of the points late in that marathon game. But Medvedev kept forcing him to hit tough volleys, and Alcaraz was stumped on the last two.

In the end, the puzzle presented by Medvedev was too tough to overcome. It was the third seed’s turn to endure a titanic service game in the final game of the match, but he fought off three break points and sealed the deal with a hugely satisfying overhead that bounded high into the stands.

Medvedev’s latest stretch of dominance sets him up for a rematch of that 2021 final against Novak Djokovic—a match he won in straight sets to deny the Serbian a calendar-year Grand Slam.

In order to stop Djokovic from claiming a record-tying 24th major singles title, Medvedev knows he will need another otherworldly showing.

Suryakumar Yadav needs minor mindset shift to crack ODI code: AB de Villiers

Suryakumar Yadav needs minor mindset shift to crack ODI code: AB de Villiers

Durban: Former South African captain AB de Villiers feels that India’s No. 1 T20 batter Suryakumar Yadav needs a slight tweak in his mindset in order to replicate his success in the 50-over format.

The world No. 1 in shortest format, who has managed to hold onto his spot in India’s squad for the upcoming World Cup, averages a poor 24.33 in ODIs, with only two half-centuries in 24 innings with a strike-rate of 101.38.

Suryakumar himself has referred to numbers as “really bad”. Suryakumar, who has modelled his batting in De Villiers 360-degree hitting style, has found a fan in the South African.

“You guys know I’m a big fan (of Surya). He plays in a similar manner to how I used to play, but in ODIs, he hasn’t cracked it yet,” the South African said on his YouTube channel ‘AB de Villiers 360′.

“It is a tiny little mind switch that he’s got to make, and he’s got all the ability and capabilities that he needs to do that,” he added. “I am very relieved to see SKY in the World Cup squad, I’m very happy about it. I hope he gets this opportunity in this World Cup,” he said.

“Looking at the balance of the Indian squad, he might not start, but a World Cup is a long tournament. So let’s see what happens then,” he added.

Asked about Sanju Samson’s exclusion from the World Cup squad, De Villiers said: “I don’t have to say much about him. We know what he’s capable of.” “I’ve been on the receiving end for RCB, watching him score 92 not out at the Chinnaswamy. The ball was flying all over the place. He’s also got the conventional cricket game and technique where he plays with a straight bat, plays the ball nicely. He’s got a good pull and hook shot.

“He’s got everything in his bag. It’s all in the mind and it’s a matter of adapting to ODI and gameplans and the World Cup and the pressure thereof. So yes, two great players,” he said.

Playing the World Cup at home will put Team India under huge pressure and De Villiers’ mantra for Rohit Sharma and Co is to “go fearless” in their bid to replicate the 2011 success.

“I think India’s squad is incredible, really, really strong. The only worry I have for India is playing at home. They played in India, they won. There will be huge pressure. That’s the only big obstacle in my opinion.

“But if they can get rid of that and just free themselves up, I see no problem for India. Control what you can control. But go fearless.

“Fearless is the word I’m looking for the Indian squad. If they can do that, they’ll go a long way and most probably lift that trophy,” he said.
India will begin their campaign against Australia in Chennai on October 8.

The World Cup will kick-start with 2019 finalists England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad on October 5.

Asia Cup: My workload is twice or thrice as much as anybody else’s, says Hardik Pandya

Hardik Pandya shed light on the unique challenges and mindset of an all-rounder, saying his workload in a match is twice or thrice more than anybody else’s

Asia Cup: My workload is twice or thrice as much as anybody else’s, says Hardik Pandya

Colombo: Ahead of India’s Super Four match against Pakistan in the Asia Cup, all-rounder and vice-captain Hardik Pandya shed light on the unique challenges and mindset of an all-rounder, saying his workload in a match is twice or thrice more than anybody else’s.

After the 2019 ODI World Cup ended in England, Pandya underwent a major back surgery, which limited his all-round performing abilities. But a change in lifestyle and fitness approach has resulted in him being back to his best and being a reliable all-rounder for the side ahead of 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup in India.

“As an all-rounder, my workload is twice or thrice as anyone else. When a batter in the team goes and bats and finishes his batting and is heading home, I’ll still be bowling after that. So for me, all the managing, all the pushing, and everything happens during the sessions or my training or my pre-camp season,” said Pandya to Star Sports.

On match days, Pandya sees his role gets adjusted as per the conditions and requirements in a particular situation and backs himself to get the job done. “When the game arrives, it is more about whatever the team requires, and the managing side goes out of the park, and it is more practical calls that how many overs are needed for me. Because if 10 overs are not needed, there is no point in me bowling 10 overs, but if 10 overs are needed, then I’ll be bowling.”

“I always believed that I give myself a chance to succeed, which is by reading the game, which is by backing myself because I have always believed that when we go as a believer, when I’m standing there, yes, my ten players, my ten brothers are around me, but at the same point of time I’m alone.”

He further elaborated, “When bowling, I have to back myself to the fullest because the opposition, the batter, they want me to make a mistake. At the same point of time, as a batter, yes, two people are batting, he is there with me fighting, but there are also eleven on the ground against me, and at the same point of time, it could be the crowd or anything.”

“So what I have realised is that no matter what happens, you have to back yourself, you have to believe that you are the best in the world. That does not guarantee you success, but at the same point of time, it does give you and it does guide you to work towards success, so practically back yourself.”

IPL: Sridharan Sriram joins Lucknow Super Giants as assistant coach

New Delhi: Sridharan Sriram, the former India left-arm spinner, has joined Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) as the assistant coach for the upcoming season, the franchise said on Saturday. LSG had earlier appointed Justin Langer as their new head coach, replacing Andy Flower.

“Sriram’s appointment completes the Super Giants’ stellar backroom staff led by Langer and global mentor Gautam Gambhir. Vijay Dahiya and Pravin Tambe continue in their roles as assistant coach and spin bowling coach respectively, while the South African duo of Morne Morkel and Jonty Rhodes carry on as the team’s bowling coach and fielding coach,” added the franchise in a statement.

Sriram, who played eight ODIs for India from 2000-04, had been Australia’s assistant coach for six years, before leaving the role in 2022. He first came into the Australian set-up as a spin coach under then head-coach Darren Lehmann in 2016.

Sriram, who played domestic cricket for Tamil Nadu, as well as for Maharashtra, Goa, Assam and Himachal Pradesh in his playing career, is known to have a huge influence on leg-spinner Adam Zampa, left-arm spinner Ashton Agar, and veteran off-spinner Nathan Lyon, plus improving part-time spin of Glenn Maxwell.

He was also appointed as technical consultant for the Bangladesh T20I side from the Asia Cup to the T20 World Cup in Australia last year. Sriram, who earned the prestigious distinction of an ECB Level-3 “Head Coach” in 2008, has been involved with the IPL previously, working as an assistant coach specialising in batting and spin bowling for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) till this year’s IPL.

Chahal’s stellar debut for Kent in County Championship

Kent: India leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has made an impressive start to his County Championship stint with Kent, claiming three wickets against Nottinghamshire in a Division One fixture.

Snubbed by the national selectors for the ongoing Asia Cup and the upcoming World Cup, the 33-year-old returned 20-6-52-3 on Day Two of the four-day contest, here on Monday.

Chahal dismissed Nottinghamshire batters Matthew Montgomery, Lyndon James and Calvin Harrison to help his side reduce their opponents to 219 for eight in reply to Kent’s total of 446.

For his first wicket, Chahal cleaned up James with a superb leg break delivery which knocked down the batter’s off-stump. Earlier this season, Kent had signed up India pacer Arshdeep Singh who played five matches and took 13 wickets.

Chahal has been a regular member of the Indian T20 side but has not played ODI cricket since January this year. His last assignment with the Indian team was in their five-match T20I series against the West Indies.

The leg-spinner signed up with Kent for three County matches, at home against Nottinghamshire and Lancashire and for an away fixture against Somerset.

Kildare: Shubhankar Sharma dropped a late bogey after a front nine to shoot six-under 66 as a follow up to his first round 65 and move to 13-under at the halfway stage of the Horizon Irish Open.

Sharma shared the lead with Jordan Smith, who seemed to be moving into sole lead before he had a double bogey on the challenging 17th. Smith closed with a birdie for a seven-under 65 and he was also 13-under on the Palmer North Course at the K Club.

The star-studded field includes Rory McIlroy (69-70) in T-26th place and Shane Lowry (68-68) is T-9. Things did not go too well for the other Indian Manu Gandas (73-78) as he missed the cut by a big margin.

Sharma, seeking his first DP World Tour victory since 2018, raced through the front nine in 7-under 28 with seven birdies and two pars. At that stage Sharma after 27 holes was bogey-free and 14 under.

A bogey each on the Par-5 tenth and the Par-4 17th where he went into the water pushed him back as he had two bogeys and a birdie on 11th for a day’s work of 6-under after the first round 7-under.

At 13-under he was six shots ahead of the next player at one stage. But by the end of the day, Sharma was joined by Smith.

“It was a really quick start. Very early morning start for us, so I was a bit sleepy in the morning. I managed to make a lot of putts on the front nine,” Sharma said.

“I had nine single putts which was amazing. I don’t think I’ve done that before. Everything was just going nicely. I was hitting it in the right spots and I was really good inside ten feet. So it all came together.” “It was amazing. It was flowing nicely. I was hitting in the right spots, and I was really good inside 10 feet. It was still hot, unusual for Ireland. The greens were better. It is still gettable and scoreable.” “I am not much of a stats guy. Good you told me. I am a bit of a feel guy. I was sick last week but played good this week. I have been working on some things and it’s good to see things working out,” he aded.

Sharma, who opened the season with T-7 at his first event of 2023 in Abu Dhabi, has had just one more Top-10 since then and it came at the Open, where he became the first Indian to log a Top-10 at the Open.

Currently 65th, he is also looking at getting into the Top-50 to qualify for the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai in November. Smith, who won his second DP World Tour title at last year’s Portugal Masters, carded nine birdies and a double bogey in his round of 65.

Sharma and Smith sit one stroke ahead of Englishman Ross Fisher, who went bogey-free after signing for a second consecutive round of 66, with Germany’s Hurly Long occupying fourth place on 11 under par.

In fifth is Scotsman Calum Hill, who carded three eagles and three birdies in his round of 65.

Cardiff: Former England cricketer Andrew Flintoff made his first appearance in nine months at the Sophia Gardens on Friday as he joined up with the England squad for their one-day international series against New Zealand.

The 45-year-old was hospitalised last December after he suffered facial injuries in an accident while shooting for Top Gear at Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey last year, according to Sky Sports.

England played their first ODI match of the one-day international series gainst New Zealand. However, they lost the game by eight wickets. Flintoff who has played in 79 Tests and 141 one-day matches for England, joined the England team and pictured with him.

England captain Jos Buttler was delighted that Flintoff joined the squad. After the match, Buttler said as quoted by Sky Sports, “So he’s been starting to do some stuff in cricket. It’s just great for him to be around, he’s obviously an England legend and it’s just nice to have him around the group.” The England ODI captain cleared that Flintoff has not been given specific role, he was just there to observe. “He’s not been brought in with any specific role, just to be around and observe. A few of the lads can pick his brains a little bit and he’s settled in really well. It’s great to have him with us. Just for this series,” Buttler said.

In the match, New Zealand opted to bowl first. England got off to a solid start with 80-run partnership between Harry Brook (25 in 41 balls, with two fours) and Dawid Malan (54 in 53 balls, with nine fours). England then sunk to 101/3.

Then an 88-run stand between Buttler (72) and a returning Ben Stokes (52 in 69 balls with three fours and a six) and a 77-run partnership between Buttler and Liam Livingstone (52 in 40 balls, with three fours and three sixes) helped England reach 291/6 in 50 overs. Rachin Ravindra (3/48) and Tim Southee (2/71) were the pick of the bowlers for NZ.

In the chase of 292, openers Devon Conway and Will Young (29) helped NZ get off to a solid start, forming a 61-run stand. Then followed a 56-run partnership between Conway and Henry Nicholls (26 in 30 balls, with three fours). After England reduced NZ to 117/2, Conway (111* in 121 balls with 13 fours and a six) and Daryl Mitchell (118* in 91 balls with seven fours and seven sixes) dismantled the English bowling with their hitting, forming a match-winning 180-run partnership. Conway was adjudged as the ‘Player of the Match’ for his century.

Neymar ‘grateful’ after breaking Pele’s Brazil scoring record

Belem: Neymar expressed gratitude and humility after surpassing Pele as Brazil’s all-time leading scorer.

Neymar struck twice as the five-time world champions romped to a 5-1 win over Bolivia in their opening World Cup qualifier in the northern Brazilian city of Belem, reports Xinhua.

“I’m very happy, lost for words,” news outlet Globo Esporte quoted the 31-year-old as saying.

“I never imagined reaching this record and right now I want to say that passing Pele does not mean that I am better than him, or any player in the national team.”

The Al Hilal forward now has 79 goals in 124 appearances since his international debut in 2010. Pele, regarded by many as the greatest player in history, scored 77 times in 92 official matches for his country.

“I always wanted to write my name in the history of Brazilian football and the Brazilian team,” Neymar said. “Today I did that. To my family and all my friends who are here, I am very grateful.”

Brazil’s next qualifier for the 2026 World Cup – to be played in the United States, Canada and Mexico – will be against Peru in Lima on Tuesday.

Manjrekar advises India to brace for Shaheen Afridi’s good length deliveries in Asia Cup

Afridi shone as Pakistan’s top bowler, claiming 4-35 to dismiss India for 266 in last week’s Asia Cup Group A match at Pallekele.

Manjrekar advises India to brace for Shaheen Afridi’s good length deliveries in Asia Cup

Colombo: With India-Pakistan Asia Cup Super Four clash happening in Colombo on Sunday, focus will be on how the Indian batters will counter Pakistan’s pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi.

Afridi emerged as the stand-out bowler for Pakistan by taking 4-35 in skittling India for 266 in the Asia Cup Group A match at Pallekele last week. Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar spoke on how the Indian top order should prepare themselves to face Afridi in the upcoming highly-anticipated clash.

“Actually, the match between India and Pakistan was a very interesting clash between Shaheen Afridi versus India’s 1, 2, and 3. Gill, Rohit, and Virat. The opening phase had two spells; in the first spell before the rain had come, he was bowling typical Shaheen Afridi kind of deliveries. He was bowling further up the pitch, trying to get the ball to swing inwards, and that length was being played very well by Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma,” said Manjrekar to Star Sports.

Though he tested openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, Shaheen got success after the first rain interruption in India’s innings. Shaheen found some movement to beat Rohit twice and finally got his man when the left-arm pacer got one to nip back in and hit the top of the right-handed batter’s off-stump through the gate.

In his next over, Shaheen cramped Virat Kohli for room on an attempted punch, to which the right-handed batter could only chop on to his stumps. It also made Shaheen the first bowler in international cricket to get Rohit and Kohli out via “bowled” mode of dismissal in a ODI match in his electrifying opening spell.

“Shaheen Afridi, instead of bowling it up further, which he thought was his main weapon – to bring the ball up further and have it swing, was being played very well by the Indian team and the Indian openers. After that, the rain happened, and Waqar Younis, who was in commentary with me, said that he should pull his length a bit back; it should be a little short.”

“And after the rain, someone must have spoken to Shaheen Afridi, and after the break, he brought his length back and in that length, the good length, Rohit Sharma got out, and so did Virat. So it wasn’t the typical Shaheen Afridi kind of delivery that troubled the Indian batters, but the shorter length, meaning the movement from the pitch made them out,” added Manjrekar.

In the last ten overs of the innings, Shaheen would take out Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja in the same over to lead a late Pakistan fightback and limit India to 266. “So they need to prepare for these kinds of deliveries as well, but for the main swinging delivery of Shaheen Afridi, the good news was that both Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill weren’t phased by that,” stated Manjrekar.

He also praised Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya for leading India’s fightback in the match. After scoring a majestic 210 against Bangladesh while opening the batting at Chattogram last year, Kishan showed a versatile side of him by making a sensible 82 at number five against Pakistan.

India were reduced to 66-4, before Kishan and Pandya, who made 87, stepped up in a pressure situation to stitch an important 138-run partnership. “See the match that happened between India and Pakistan, there was no result to the match, but it was a great result for India, and the main result which India wanted was that contribution from Hardik Pandya, the runs, and Ishan Kishan also played well. And the two of them played so well because it was out of character. Both Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya.”

“And the talk about Hardik is that he is a very aggressive player, whenever he wants he can hit massive sixes, but for almost 70 minutes, Hardik Pandya was only taking singles and building his innings because he had to play conservatively. 50 overs cricket is a game of singles, especially the middle phase, it is a very boring phase for both the crowd and the players.”

“But both Hardik Pandya and Ishan Kishan played that boring phase, played their innings well, and brought India to a respectable position. So that was a very good result for India, that partnership and how they forgot their natural game and kept the team’s needs ahead of that. I think that was the best finding from that match,” concluded Manjrekar.
