Tennis: Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Medvedev Victorious; Tsitsipas Falls

Florida: Carlos Alcaraz spoiled fellow Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena’s 31st birthday celebrations with a 6-2, 6-1 victory.

Alcaraz is on a seven-match winning streak, and he has not been beaten by a Spaniard in the last 11 matches – the last one to do so was Rafael Nadal in the 2022 Indian Wells semifinal.

The 20-year-old next faces the winner of resurgent French veteran Gael Monfils, who dispatched in-form Australian Jordan Thompson 6-7 (3-7), 6-1, 6-2.

The Spaniard is confident in Miami, where he claimed his first Masters 1000 crown. Alcaraz is now 11-2 at the tournament.

Earlier, World No. 3 Italian Jannik Sinner was made to wait overnight for the chance to seal an opening win at the Miami Open. The second seed ensured it was worth the wait on Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium, where he breezed past countryman Andrea Vavassori 6-3, 6-4.

Arriving in Miami after Alcaraz snapped his 16-win start to the 2024 season in the Indian Wells semi-finals, Sinner completed an 80-minute victory against his countryman to reach the third round.

The match had been suspended on Friday with Vavassori serving at 2-3, 40/40, and Sinner made his move immediately upon resumption by breaking for a 4-2 lead.

Up next for the Italian is Netherlands’ Talon Griekspoor, an opponent he defeated in all three previous encounters.

Meanwhile, Daniil Medvedev started strong in his title defence, beating Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics on Grandstand 6-4, 6-2 in 1 hour and 19 minutes.

The match had been scheduled as the feature night match on Stadium court on Friday but was cancelled due to rain. But the switch to afternoon conditions and Grandstand court proved no barrier to the World No. 4, had won 81% of his first serve points and was able to save the only two break points he face.

Medvedev is attempting to successfully defend a title for the first time in his career. The 28-year-old has won 20 different titles, including 18 on hard court.

He next faces No. 30 seed Cameron Norrie, who defeated 21-year-old Italian Flavio Cobolli 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-2.

The No. 10 seed Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas was halted by Canada’s Denis Shapovalov 2-6, 4-6. It is the first time the Greek leaves Miami before the fourth round – his best appearance was in 2021 when he reached the quarterfinals.

Other men’s seeds to advance were No. 4 Alexander Zverev, who defeated Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-2, 6-4; Polish Hubert Hurkacz, the No. 8 seed and 2021 Miami Open champion, who overcame Kazakhstan’s Alexander Shevchenko 6-4, 6-7(2), 6-3; and Norwegian Casper Ruud, the No. 7 seed, halting France’s Luca van Assche 7-6(5), 1-6, 6-1.

IPL 2024: SRH skipper Pat Cummins pleased with team’s performance

IPL 2024: SRH skipper Pat Cummins pleased with team’s performance

Kolkata: After losing the last ball thriller against Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, SunRisers Hyderabad skipper Pat Cummins backed his team and said that they performed really well in the match.

An explosive half-century by Andre Russell helped the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) edge past Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by four runs in their IPL 2024 match at Eden Gardens on Saturday. Heinrich Klaasen’s 29-ball 63 went in vain, as he took SRH close to victory but could not take them beyond the finish line.

Russell played an unbeaten inning of 64 runs off just 25 balls with the help of seven massive sixes and three boundaries. He also picked two wickets in the match, where he bowled two overs and conceded 25 runs in his spell.

The right-arm pacer asserted that it was wonderful game of cricket and it’s unfortunate that we end up on a losing side.

“Close game in the end, wonderful game of cricket. Unfortunately didn’t go our way. I thought for the most part, really happy with how we bowled. Obviously Dre Russ at the end there does what Dre Russ does, he’s pretty hard to contain. Overall, I thought we did a pretty good job. You do your planning, you try to execute your best but a pretty tough guy to bowl to, played some good shots, couple of balls maybe we could have bowled a little bit differently but toughest job in cricket is bowling at someone like that in the end,” Cummins said in the post-match presentation.

The World Cup-winning player further applauded the wicketkeeper-batter from South Africa, Heinrich Klassen who almost pulled of the game for the SRH.

“It’s one of those, goes one way or the other, amazing job by Klaas (Klaasen) and Shahbaz to get us back into the game and get us into that position. Who would have thought we’d get that close. Unfortunately a little bit too much. In a game where we didn’t really pull it all together, we still almost competed against a very good side at their home venue, lots to be encouraged by, lot of good performers, a couple of points to work on also. Happy with how the toss went,” the Australian cricketer added.

Coming to the match, put to bat first by SRH, KKR was reduced to 51/4 in 7.3 overs. However, a half-century by Phil Salt (54 in 40 balls, with three fours and three sixes) and an explosive knock by Ramandeep Singh (35 in 17 balls, with a four and four sixes) kept the team’s run rate just fine, but still they were struggling at 119/6 in 13.5 overs.

An explosive 67-run partnership followed between Andre Rusell (64* in 25 balls, with three fours and seven sixes) and Rinku Singh (23 in 15 balls, with three fours), powering KKR to 208/7 in 20 overs.
T Natrajan (3/32) and Mayank Markande (2/32) were the top bowlers for SRH.

In the chase of 209 runs, SRH started off well with a 60-run opening stand between Mayank Agarwal (32 in 21 balls with four boundaries and a six) and Abhishek Sharma (32 in 19 balls, with four boundaries and two sixes). The team lost their way and was soon 145/5 in 16.5 overs.

However, Heinrich Klaasen (63 in 29 balls with eight sixes) and Shahbaz Ahmed (16 in five balls, with a four and two sixes) unreleased a barrage of sixes towards the end, torching pacer Mitchell Starc with a prize tag of over Rs 24 crore for 26 runs in his over, ending his first figures for KKR at 0/53 in four overs. 13 runs were needed in final over, but Harshit Rana (3/33) held his nerves, taking two wickets and defending the remaining runs.

Andre Russell secured the ‘Player of the Match’ for his half-century and figures of 2/25.

Kenya’s World Cup legend Collins Obuya retires after 23-year-old international cricket career

New Delhi: Kenya all-rounder Collins Obuya, who played a starring role in their dream ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2003 campaign, had called time on his 23-year-old international career.

Obuya who had made his international debut back in 2001 against the West Indies, retired after featuring in his side’s 106-run defeat against Uganda in the third-place play-off of the African Games.

The 42-year-old was Kenya’s leading run-getter in the tournament, with 184 runs from five innings.

“I have decided to retire from the game after 23 years. It’s been a big honour playing for Kenya,” Obuya stated after the game, as quoted by ICC.

“I want to thank everyone, my teammates and my family who have been there for me in good times and hard times. It has been a lovely career for me, to have been able to play that long. I am very proud of my career, but it’s time to concentrate on my coaching back home and do what good I can for cricket,” he added.

With 2044 ODI runs, Obuya is one of the four Kenya players to have scored over 2000 runs in the format, before they were stripped of ODI status. And his 1794 T20I runs are the most by any Kenya batter. He also picked up 60 international wickets.

The leg-spinning allrounder’s best ODI knock came against Australia in the 2011 World Cup, an unbeaten 98 that unfortunately ended up in a losing cause. Following Kenya’s dismal 2011 World Cup campaign, Obuya replaced Jimmy Kamande as their captain. He resigned two years later in 2013 after the team failed to qualify for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2014.

In the 2003 Cricket World Cup, Obuya’s 5-24 helped the African side upend a much stronger Sri Lanka team. With wickets of Aravinda de Silva, Kumar Sangakkara, and Mahela Jayawardene in the game, he helped Kenya to a 53-run win.

Crucial points from this win helped Kenya reach the Super Six stage of the tournament, and eventually the semifinals, becoming the only non-Test playing nation to have achieved the feat.

Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper Pat Cummins picks starc’s ‘yorker’ as lifelong delivery

Kolkata: Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper Pat Cummins named the yorker as the one delivery ,  would bowl if he had to do it for the rest of his life.

Cummins and Starc have represented Australia together across different formats in numerous games. But in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 both players will be up against each other as Kolkata Knight Riders face SRH on Saturday.

Ahead of the game, Cummins and Starc named one delivery that both speedsters would use if they had to do it for the rest of their lives. Cummins named yorker as the delivery that Starc would use throughout his life, a variation that has yielded a lot of wickets for him.

“Better yorker definitely Starc. It is probably the yorker that he has got a lot of wickets with,” Cummins said in a video posted by IPL on X.

Starc went on to admit that he has got a better yorker than Cummins and added, “I have definitely got a better yorker. I never had to face myself so in my experience it is hard to face Pat.”

The left-arm pacer went on to hail Cummins for the all-rounded attribute that he possesses and the way he effectively uses the bouncer.

“Pat is good at all of the things. He uses the bouncer a lot more than I do and he uses it effectively. If he had to bowl one delivery for the rest of his life it would be bouncer,” Starc said.

The spotlight will be on the Australian duo during the match as they walk in as two of the most expensive players in the history of the tournament. During the IPL 2024 auction, Starc became the most expensive player in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He was bought by the Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 24.75 crore at the auction in Dubai.

SRH acquired the services of the Australian World Cup-winning skipper for Rs 20.50 crore making Cummins the second most expensive player in the history of the IPL.

Fans will be expecting both players to live up to their hefty price tag and deliver match-winning performances for the team.

Swiss Open: Kidambi Srikanth advances to Semis; Priyanshu, Kiran exit

Basel: Indian shuttler Kidambi Srikanth continued his impressive campaign at the Swiss Open Super 300 tournament, storming into the semifinals with a commanding straight-game 21-10, 21-14 victory over Chia Hao Lee of Chinese Taipei.

From the onset, Srikanth asserted his dominance, surging to an early 11-5 lead and maintaining relentless pressure on his opponent. Despite a brief resurgence from Lee, Srikanth maintained his composure and showcased his superior skills to clinch the first game convincingly by 21-10.

In the second game, Srikanth’s attacking prowess proved too much for Lee to handle, as the Indian shuttler sealed his semifinal berth with another emphatic win.

Srikanth’s path to the semifinals was marked by determination and skill, setting the stage for a tantalizing showdown against Lin Chun Yi of Chinese Taipei in the next round.

While Srikanth’s stellar run captured the headlines, Indian shuttlers Priyanshu Rajawat and Kiran George faced disappointment as they were knocked out of the tournament in their respective matches. Priyanshu fell short against Chou Tien Chen (15-21, 19-21), while Kiran George suffered defeat at the hands of Rasmus Gemke (23-21, 17-21, 15-21).

In the women’s doubles event, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand endured a tough outing, succumbing to a straight-game defeat (14-21, 15-21) against Australia’s Setyana Mapasa and Angela Yu. The loss dealt a blow to their Olympic qualification aspirations, as they currently share the 14th place in the rankings. With the Olympic Games on the horizon, Treesa and Gayatri face an uphill battle to secure their spot in the prestigious event.

In the doubles category, the qualification scenario adds further complexity, with only the top two pairings having a chance to qualify if they rank within the top 8 by April 28. Otherwise, the top pair within the world number 16 will earn the coveted Olympic berth.
