Israeli settlers will no longer feel safe in occupied territories: Journalist

By Alireza Hashemi

The latest Palestinian resistance operation against the Israeli regime marks a “turning point” in the struggle for the liberation of occupied territories, proving yet again that the regime cannot protect settlers, says a Canadian-American journalist.

Robert Fantina, a Canada-based author and activist who has written several books on Palestine and serves on the board of ‘Canadian Voices for Palestinian Rights’, in an interview with the Press TV website said the operation has sent a message that the regime’s atrocities will no longer go unanswered.

“Palestinians in Gaza have shown that they can challenge the apartheid regime, and regardless of the response, Israelis can never again be complacent in their criminal activities; they are not safe anywhere as long as the occupation continues,” he remarked.

The Gaza-based Hamas resistance movement on Saturday morning launched a surprise attack on the regime, firing thousands of missiles and rockets into the Israeli-occupied territories.

Concurrently, resistance forces entered the Israeli-controlled territories and attacked illegal settlements around Gaza.  The operation has left more than a thousand Israelis dead, with hundreds of other Israeli soldiers and settlers ending up as war prisoners in the besieged Gaza Strip.

Senior Hamas official Saleh al-Arouri described the attack as a pre-emptive strike, saying the movement acted on information that an Israeli strike on the coastal strip was in the offing.

“Regardless of the number of people that Israel kills, Israelis will no longer feel safe. They know now that their fascist regime cannot protect them. They will increase their ‘security’ measures. But none of it will be sufficient to allow people to feel secure anywhere within the artificial entity known as Israel,” Fantina said in a conversation with the Press TV website.

He hailed the Hamas operation as a success story and said it severely damaged the Israeli regime.

“Countless martyrs have given their lives since this operation began and continue to. But the people of Palestine have demonstrated repeatedly that they will not surrender,” the author and activist noted.

“This current operation is perhaps the most dramatic demonstration of their courage and resilience. Regardless of the eventual outcome, this operation must be seen as successful.”

Fantina said the people of the besieged Gaza Strip have lived under “horrific conditions” for decades and it’s totally natural for them to fight back against the occupying regime.

“The Zionist entity’s complete blockade has caused the Palestinians unspeakable suffering. The economy is in shambles; basic needs are prevented from being imported; there is no opportunity for travel, even to other parts of Palestine; building materials are banned by Israel, meaning that there can only be a minimal reconstruction of the damage done by Israel’s many bombings,” he asserted.

“No one should ever have to live under such circumstances. And the full responsibility does not lie with Israel; the international community, and especially the United States, shares in the blame and shame of these atrocious violations of international law and human rights. Anyone should recognize that people oppressed so horribly will eventually fight back, and that is what the people of Gaza did.”

Ground invasion of Gaza unlikely

Fantina further said a ground invasion of the coastal strip seems unlikely, partly due to the fact that Israelis are particularly fearful of human casualties.

“A ground invasion is unlikely at this time for a few reasons. One is that the US is sending its most powerful warships to assist Israel. Additionally, Israeli forces are busy harassing and killing Palestinians in the West Bank, and the regime will not want to remove them from there,” he stated.

“Lastly, the fascist population of Israel seems to view soldiers as revered beings, not the savage terrorists that they are, and Benjamin Netanyahu will not want to risk their lives if it’s avoidable.”

Fantina said the conflict is likely to expand as the Israeli regime continues its gratuitous atrocities.

“This conflict is bound to expand, even if it doesn’t do so immediately. Lebanon has already pounded Israeli targets, forcing Israel to face two fronts. The US, by sending warships, is only complicating the problem, and this decision could bring Iran into the war to support Palestine.”

The US-based author further noted that Hamas’ operation has badly damaged the prospects of a rapprochement between Israel and Saudi Arabia, which he said would “in no way benefit Palestine”.

Fantina said comparing the reaction of the West and its allies to the Palestinian operation with Ukraine’s attacks on Russia once again exposes their hypocritical attitude.

“International hypocrisy is clearly on display in these situations. Many governments are blinded to Palestine’s victimization but talk extensively about Ukraine.”

He cited two main reasons for the Western double standards on Palestine.

“One is that Palestine is a mainly-Muslim nation, and Western nations show hostility toward all things Islam. Since the 9/11 attacks, Muslims have been the invented enemy of the US, a nation that always needs an enemy in order to justify to the citizenry its bloated military budget,” Fantina noted.

“A second reason is that pro-Israeli lobby groups are among the largest donors to these officials and, not wanting to jeopardize those contributions, they will overlook Israeli crimes against humanity. This is simply another example of the hypocrisy of government officials working in a flawed system that benefits them personally, but no one else.”

Israeli military admits to loss of at least 123 soldiers

In a statement on Tuesday, the Israeli regime military claimed that it had finally regained control over its suddenly porous border with the Gaza Strip Tuesday morning, some 72 hours after Hamas blew through sections of the barrier and launched a surprise attack that saw over 1,000 Zionists killed or taken to the Strip as hostages.

According to the Times of Israel’s report, the death toll in Israel from the surprise attack and subsequent battles rose above 900, according to reports. Over 500 people remained hospitalized, many with life-threatening injuries; over 2,700 have been injured since Saturday.

Meanwhile, the regime military admitted that there are a small number of Palestinian Resistance fighters still hiding in Israeli-controlled occupied territory.

The Israeli death toll includes at least 123 soldiers, the military said, adding 38 new names to its tally.

Over 187,500 Gazans displaced: UN

More than 187,500 people have been displaced in Gaza since the beginning of the conflict, according to a report from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, is hosting more than 137,000 people in schools across the territory. The report says airstrikes have razed 790 housing units and severely damaged 5,330 in the territory of 2.3 million people.

US mayor slammed for calling pro-Palestine protesters ‘extremists’

An American mayor has been slammed for promoting violence and Islamophobia, over his “abhorrent” remarks referring to pro-Palestine protesters as “extremists” who support “terrorism.”

Hundreds of people marched in Manhattan’s New York City on Sunday to express their support for Palestine as fighting is underway between Palestinian resistance fighters and the Israeli regime.

In tweets posted on Sunday, New York City Mayor Eric Adams wrote “Throughout the day, I’ve been monitoring the protest that started in Times Square and that moved through our streets to outside the Israeli Consulate General’s Office in New York.”

“At a moment when innocent people are being slaughtered and children kidnapped in Israel, it is disgusting that this group of extremists would show support for terrorism. I reject this. New York City rejects this,” he said, adding “Do not use our streets to spread your hate.”

Ibrahim Mossallam, an activist and former board chairman at the Council on American–Islamic Relations (Cair) – New York who participated in the Sunday rally with his two teenage children, described the march as peaceful.

The demonstrators were chanting “Resistance is justified when people are occupied,” he added.

Middle East Eye on Monday quoted Mossallam as saying that Adams’ comments are promoting violence and Islamophobia against “members of his constituency as he succumbs to Zionist political power influence on US (government) office servants to advance their anti-Palestinian messaging.”

He further said he encouraged his son and daughter to attend the rally and “see for themselves what is happening as they build the understanding of what this occupation is and how it has resulted in the dehumanization of Palestinians in the West.”

“They got a first-hand experience after coming home and seeing the mayor of the greatest city in America label them as extremists and terrorists.”

Mossallam emphasized that Palestinians want all loss of life to end, but to do so, “the root of the problem, which is Israel’s decades-long illegal occupation of Palestinian land and the denial of Palestinian human rights, must end.”

Cair-NY executive director Afaf Nasher also echoed Mossallam’s remarks, saying Mayor Adam’s “irresponsible” response fuels Islamophobic rhetoric, urging him to renounce his words.

“Not only does Mayor Adam’s reckless rhetoric cater to a one-sided agenda, but blatantly undermines the constitutional right of all Americans to protest and engage in free speech,” Nasher said in a statement on Monday.

Maryam Musa, a Palestinian New Yorker who also attended the rally with her cousins, said Adams’ comments bothered her, especially as she was one of the thousands of Muslims who voted for him.

“I supported him for a long time… But after his comments on this? I cannot find it in my moral compass to support this man,” she said.

“Shame on him for ignoring the Palestinian struggle. For comparing us to extremists. For telling us not to use streets that are ours,” she said, adding, “This was a changing point in history. Back in Palestine and here, too.”

‘Truly abhorrent’

The rally was criticized by many elected American officials, including New York Governor Kathy Hochul, who said it was “abhorrent and morally repugnant.”

But many New Yorkers opposed those remarks.

Rebecca, a Jewish college student in New York who didn’t want her last name used, told MEE she attended the rally on Sunday with two of her friends to voice solidarity with Palestinians as she learned about the ethnic cleansing of Palestine after she went to college.

“Israel doesn’t belong to the Jews. It’s literally stolen land. Stolen land that was accomplished by literally ethnically cleansing hundreds of thousands of Arabs,” she said, adding “Me and everyone else at the march yesterday were there supporting Palestinian resistance. To call us extremists, that is what is truly abhorrent.”

The City University of New York Jewish Student Law Association also denounced Adams’ remarks, calling them “cowardly yet unsurprising… [that Adams] who discounts the fact that much of NYC’s Jewish population REJECTS Israeli apartheid and stands with the Palestinian people!”

Middle East Eye asked Mayor Adams about his feeling after facing backlash from Muslims, Palestinians, and Jewish people over his tweet and if he felt it was appropriate, but his office emphasized that “The Mayor stands by his words.”

Another pro-Palestine rally took place outside the Israeli consulate in New York City on Monday. It was organized by Within Our Lifetime (WOL), a Palestinian-led advocacy organization.

Abdullah Akl, a Muslim activist with WOL, said that it’s appalling and dangerous to see elected officials coming out and making statements backing an apartheid regime “and ignoring the years of ethnic cleansing that the Palestinian people have been subjected to.”

“It’s a slap in the face to every Muslim New Yorker that advocates for this issue beyond just politics, as it resonates with us religiously,” he said.

“This puts the Muslim community in danger, as people see these elected officials making remarks that align terrorism with supporting Palestinian resistance,” Akl added.

Pro Palestine protests in Paris

In Paris protesters gathered to express their support for Palestine unprecedented and successful surprise military operation against Israel.By land, air and sea, with missiles, drones and even manned hang gliders, the Palestinian resistance sent illegal settlers fleeing, captured Israeli soldiers, and, commandeered and confiscated Israeli military equipment to the joy of longtime pro Palestinian activists.

We are all witnessing incredible actions by the Palestinian armed resistance, who, as far as we know, manage to come out of this huge concentration camp that Gaza is and inflict severe losses to the Israeli soldiers and settlers. We are looking at the news every minute.

The reasons for the offensive seem to be too many to count. This year has already seen a record annual number of West Bank children murdered where Israel wages ten police raids every day.

Tel Aviv has recently approved the construction of thousands of additional illegal settlements, which one Palestinian official views as a declaration of open war against the Palestinian people.

Last year Israeli murders of West Bank Palestinians reached their highest level since 2005. While the Israeli blockade of Gaza, which has been ongoing since 2007, is routinely labeled a crime against humanity.

Israel’s horrific crimes against Palestinians go back many, many, decades, but so does the collaboration in these crimes by Western governments, who often claim to defend human rights.

Today, we are of course going to congratulate the Palestinian resistance and to expose the complicity of our government, to start with the French government who has never stopped collaborating with Israeli occupation and colonization because, nobody says it but it’s not two armies, one against the other, it’s people that are occupied and people that are occupying.

More protests in support of Palestinians are expected to take place, despite the fact that in 2014 France, infamously, became the first country in the world to ban pro Palestinian demonstrations.

‘Al-Aqsa Storm’ once again lays bare inefficacy of Israeli air defense systems

By Ivan Kesic

The Al-Aqsa Storm operation launched by the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas in the wee hours of Saturday morning laid bare the myth of the Israeli regime’s invincibility.

More importantly, it exposed yet again the hollow claims of the regime in Tel Aviv that its air defense systems, especially the much-hyped Iron Dome system, are impenetrable.

A barrage of rockets rained on the occupied territories on Saturday, killing more than 1,000 Israeli soldiers and settlers, demonstrating the upper hand of the Palestinian resistance groups.

With the latest Palestinian operation, numerous Israeli myths were debunked – a regime that is impossible to invade, an omnipotent spy agency, the Merkava tank, and the Iron Dome system.

Another round of embarrassment

On the first day of the Al-Aqsa Storm operation on Saturday, Hamas and other Palestinian resistance groups fired at least 5,000 rockets, targeting strategic places throughout the occupied territories.

Despite the regime’s appeals to settlers not to post videos of rocket-hit sites to avoid weakening the morale of soldiers and exposing the damage, hundreds of videos quickly made it to social media.

Missiles hit critical infrastructure in dozens of heavily militarized places and caused massive damage, including two fuel storage facilities that billowed thick black smoke.

Palmachim Airbase was also hit, as well as several military bases along the border with Gaza, which were then quickly captured by the resistance fighters.

On the third day of the operation, multiple videos confirmed that the Ben Gurion Airport terminal near Tel Aviv had also been hit, causing panic among settlers fleeing the occupied territories.

Ideally, none of the above targets should have been hit, as the purpose of the air-defense systems is to protect strategic locations and populated areas. However, the systems again failed miserably.

Proven ineffectiveness

Two months ago, the Press TV website published an analysis addressing official Israeli manipulations of the effectiveness of the Iron Dome anti-aircraft system, all with the purpose of export and profit.

This system is designed to intercept and destroy short-range rockets and artillery shells and has been touted in recent years as extremely successful with “90 percent” effectiveness.

However, such claims are just a cheap marketing ploy by the manufacturer, the Israeli regime and their sponsored articles, without any reliable independent confirmation.

Once again, as was the case with previous Palestinian retaliatory attacks, the Zionist authorities were reluctant to acknowledge the real damage caused by the barrage of Palestinian rockets.

Instead, they resorted to new incoherent justifications, claiming that the damage was limited and that the system was overwhelmed because Hamas fired 5,000 rockets in just 20 minutes.

According to available information, there are ten Iron Dome batteries across the occupied territories, each of which includes three to four launchers with 20 interceptor missiles.

Now their military sources are talking about the urgent need to double up to 20 batteries and acquire a massive number of new interceptors, which will be paid by the United States.

System’s true purpose

Until 2021, the US government spent around $1.6 billion on the Iron Dome program, with another $1 billion approved by the US Congress in 2022.

Each battery costs $50 million, and each interceptor missile $50,000, but the price per interception is around $150,000, which makes the system extremely bad in terms of cost-effectiveness.

By a simple calculation, the mere attempt to shoot down all the Palestinian rockets fired in the first minutes of the Al-Aqsa Storm operation would cost as much as $750 million, although this is practically impossible due to the need to reload the batteries.

The development of this system began in the mid-2000s, at a time when the Palestinians had rudimentary rockets in small numbers, but with the technological progress of the resistance movement’s rockets, the Iron Dome lost its effectiveness and purpose.

In the meantime, Israeli propaganda has built a mythical image of a perfect air-defense system with maximum efficiency, and even today it is trying with all its might to maintain it.

The reasons for this are multiple: to justify the expensive domestic and American financing of the project, to maintain a positive psychological effect on its citizens, and not to embarrass itself in front of the world to which it is aggressively trying to export its military equipment.

Fake assurances to settlers

Before the development of the system against artillery shells and short-range missiles, Israeli settlers were instructed how to escape to shelters in a matter of few seconds in the event of an attack, which caused general panic and sometimes even casualties.

By building the image of Iron Dome, the panic is somewhat mitigated by the psychological belief that they are protected by a powerful system and that the earlier risk is reduced to 10 percent.

This time, the Israeli authorities issued a call to citizens to stock up and hide in shelters for three days, which is evidence against the effectiveness of the Iron Dome, designed to keep the population safe.

Propaganda intended for export still continues, as videos of the “incredible” Iron Dome are again circulating on the Internet, showing alleged spectacular night interception of enemy missiles.

In all those videos, there are no light traces of two missiles (interceptor and enemy) but only of the former, nor are the warhead explosions of the latter evident, which proves that it was self-destruction due to an unsuccessful intercepting.

As mentioned in the previous Press TV website analysis, Israel’s goal was to export its Iron Dome to countries that are in a relatively stable environment and there is no danger of imminent armed conflict, hence there’s also no fear of independent non-Israeli verification of their effectiveness.

This would earn Israel billions of dollars and happily repay its failed project, but after the latest embarrassment caused by the Palestinian operation, that is even less likely than before.

Iran calls for OIC meeting on Palestine developments

Amir-Abdollahian held a phone conversation with the Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Hissein Brahim Taha on Monday night to discuss the necessity of the efforts of Islamic countries to help the oppressed people of Palestine.

Announcing the readiness of the Islamic Republic of Iran to host the OIC meeting on Palestine, the top Iranian diplomat urged urgent action from all Islamic countries to help the Palestinian people.

Hissein Brahim Taha, for his part, condemned Zionists’ attack against Palestinians and stressed the need for Islamic countries to cooperate on adopting a joint response to the aggression of the Israeli regime.

The Israeli regime launched deadly strikes on the densely-populated Gaza Strip on Saturday after the Palestinian Hamas Resistance group waged a surprise attack, dubbed Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, against the usurping entity.
