National highway turns paddy drying platform in Karimnagar

Farmers from Kothagattu and Gollapalli are utilizing these roads to dry their produce since it is more spacious and comfortable for them.

National highway turns paddy drying platform in Karimnagar

Karimnagar: The under construction Jagtial-Warangal national highway-563 has become a platform to dry paddy in some places in Karimnagar district.

Though it is a routine practice to dry paddy on local and internal roads, a shortage of drying areas and platforms has forced farmers to depend on even national highways now.

As part of work on the Jagtial-Warangal national highway, earthen roads and culverts are being constructed in some areas. Works on earthen roads are under progress in Thadikal, Ambalpur, Keshapatnam, Molangur crossroads, Gollapalli and Kothagattu.

Farmers from Kothagattu and Gollapalli are utilizing these roads to dry their produce since it is more spacious and comfortable for them.

Usually, farmers would occupy one side of local and internal roads to dry the paddy.

Compared to local roads, the space on national highways is much bigger, prompting farmers to spread the paddy on the roads placing tarpaulins before covering it with tarpaulin again.

Speaking to Telangana Today, a farmer from Kothagattu, Rajaiah, said they had no other options to dry the harvested paddy since there were no drying platforms arranged by the authorities. When asked about objections by national highway authorities, Rajaiah said the officials were also cooperating. Moreover, they were using spots where the work of the national highway was not in progress.

Farmers also reserve roads in advance by placing empty fertilizer bags on the roads before the beginning of the harvesting season. Such scenes can be witnessed all across the district, especially in Huzurabad, Veenavanka, Manakondur, Jammikunta and other areas.

Paddy is sowed in 2.66 lakh acres in the Yasangi season in Karimnagar district and 5.6 lakh metric tons of paddy is expected. Earlier, farmers used to engage labourers to harvest the crop and shift it to the market only after completely drying in the field itself.

Nowadays, drying the crop has become a big problem since harvester machines have been engaged to harvest the crop since the field is not suitable for drying purposes after using harvester machines.

As the authorities at paddy purchasing centers are asking farmers to bring the crop only after drying, ryots are forced to look for options since a majority of them do not have adequate space in their houses.

However, road safety activists have expressed concern, pointing out motorists drive bikes through the paddy spread on the road, leading to accidents.

Process of custom rice milling turns headache for officials in Mancherial

Mancherial: The process of custom rice milling (CMR) has become a tough task for Civil Supplies officials, mainly due to the lethargy of some rice millers in the district in returning the grains to the government on time.

According to officials, 1.39 lakh metric tonnes of paddy grains from the Vanakalam season were given to 53 millers in 2023. Barely 8,294 metric tonnes of the rice grains were delivered as against the target of 93,575 metric tonnes of rice so far. Show-cause notices were served against 19 mills that did not return the grains a few days ago.

Some of the millers did not return the rice grains citing reasons including shortage of labourers. They continue to fail in meeting deadlines set by the government even as the district authorities conduct review meetings and instruct them to expedite the process at regular intervals.

These millers allegedly return sub-standard quality grains, which are rejected by officials of the Food Corporation of India (FCI). It is learnt that they mill the paddy produce soon after the produce is received in a season. They allegedly sell the rice grains to traders and gain huge profits, officials said. Lack of machines to sort fine rice is also attributed to the delay in returning the processed rice.

Criminal cases to be booked

Vexed at the sluggish process of the rice milling, officials are now mulling to take serious action against rice mills that show negligence in the process of CMR. “Criminal cases will be booked against those mills who fail to return the rice grains for quite a long time,” an official said.

It is learnt that criminal cases were already booked against errant mills in Nalgonda, Karimnagar, Nizamabad and Warangal districts recently.

Quantum of paddy given to rice mills in 2023-Vanakalam: 1,39,664 metric tonnes

Target of CMR set for the district: 93,375 metric tonnes

Rice grains milled and returned so far: 8,294 metric tonnes

CMR yet to receive from mills: 85,281 metric tonnes

Rice mills: 53

Capacity: 1,863 metric tonnes

Mills served show-cause notice: 19

Rice mills served show-cause notice: Manjunatha Agro Industries (Indaram), BSY Raw Rice mill (Mudigunta), Raja Rajeshwara Industries (Morriguda), Matheshwari Agro Industries (Laxmipur), Samatha Agro Industries (Ankushapur), Shivasi Raghavendra Modran Rice Mill (Ponkal), Laxminarasimha Rice Mill (Kalamadugu), Eshwara Agro Rice mill (Indaram), Srilaxmi Srinivas Rice mill (NandulapallI), Vasavimatha Modern Rice mill (Rechini), Sri Raja Rajeswhara Modern Rice Mill, Shravani Industries (Laxmipur), Annapurna Agro Modern Rice mill, Bhavani Industries (Peddampet), Venkateshwara Rice mill (Mandamarri), Shivasai Industries and Traders (Indaram), Neelam Brothers Modern Rice mill, Chamundeshwari Industries (Peddampet) and Sri Venkateshwara Agro Industries.

BRS demands apology from Revanth Reddy for insulting Ambedkar

Hyderabad: The main opposition BRS upped the ante against the Congress, accusing the latter of deliberately neglecting and dishonouring Dr BR Ambedkar on his birth anniversary, without garlanding his 125 feet statue in Hyderabad on Sunday. The party demanded Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and the State government to tender an unconditional apology to the people of the nation for violating the constitutional mandate and failure to fulfill fundamental civic duties.

In an open letter to the Chief Minister, BRS Hyderabad in-charge Dasoju Sravan said Revanth Reddy and his government committed a heinous crime to satisfy his prejudice, ego and petty politics of vengeance towards former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao who installed the world’s tallest statue of Dr Ambedkar. “Your government’s deliberate action of neglecting, dishonouring, not decorating, and not even garlanding the world’s largest statue is not an insult only to Dr BR Ambedkar, but an insult to every citizen of Telangana and every Ambedkarite nationwide,” he said.

Former Minister S Niranjan Reddy echoed similar sentiments during a press conference and stated that not only did the State government neglected the 125 feet tall statue of Dr Ambedkar, but also did not allow civil organisations and citizens of the country to pay tributes to him at the statue on his birth anniversary. He said the Congress never had respect for the chief architect of the Constitution and modern India. He reminded that the Congress fielded candidate and defeated Dr Ambedkar when the latter contested to the Parliament.

“Despite his contribution and service to the nation, Dr Ambedkar was ignored by the successive Congress governments. Only after VP Singh took over as the Prime Minister of India, did the Centre honoured Dr Ambedkar with Bharat Ratna, which indicates the Congress party’s sheer disrespect to him,” he said. He said by disrespecting Dr Ambedkar, the Congress has insulted all its citizens. He advised the Congress against treating the Dalits and the minorities as mere vote banks and instead, learn to respect their sentiments.
