Hyderabad: Intensified seizures of spurious drugs, crackdown on medical shops and constant advocacy by TS Drug Control Administration (TSDCA) appears to have successfully galvanised chemists and druggists in Hyderabad and elsewhere in the State, to keep a close eye on the sources from where they are procuring their stocks.

Recently, the All-India Organisation for Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD), following strenuous efforts by drug control administrations from various Indian States, had released an advisory, urging its members in all the Indian States to make sure that they procure their stocks from locally known authorised wholesalers.

A few days ago, the Stateunits of AIOCD and Telangana State Chemists and Druggists Associations (TSCDA) have also launched coordinated efforts to spread awareness on the issue among its members.

For the past few months, the drug inspectors from TSDCA have been actively taking stringent measures on wholesalers/dealers, chemists and druggists involved in sale of spurious drugs. At the same time, the regulatory authorities have also been quite vocal about drug store owners procuring life-saving drugs from authorised dealers.

The AIOCD and TSCDA has given strict instructions to its members i.e., chemists and drug store owners, to procure medicines only from their own authorised wholesalers/ distributors.

As a part of these efforts, the Chemists and Druggists Association has also been conducting a series of general body meetings with their members, so that they follow the advisory.

Senior members of TSDCA told Telangana Today that the association members are now very well aware of the authorised stockists of medicines, who, in turn, procure their stock from licensed pharma manufacturing units.

“This is the only way to curb the menace of spurious and sub-standard drugs that are making way into the market. There are nearly 4,000 members of TSDCA in Hyderabad and elsewhere, who have been made very well aware of the need to source their drugs from licensed companies,” members of TSCDA said.

BRS criticises delay in paddy procurement

Hyderabad: BRS leader and former Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah raised concerns over the delay in paddy purchases, questioning the State government’s inefficiency in ensuring smooth procurement witin stipulated time.

He expressed anger, asking how much longer farmers would have to wait to sell their crops at the procurement centres.

“It has been 20 days since the government established paddy procurement centers and only 2.7 lakh tonnes of paddy has been bought. If it progresses at this pace, how many more days will it take to buy 34 lakh tonnes?” Lakshmaiah questioned, while addressing the media at Telangana Bhavan on Tuesday.

Pointing out the inconvenience faced by farmers who are forced to wait near the centres, the BRS leader criticised Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy for mismanagement of power.

He accused the ruling party of undermining the opposition and diverting attention from pressing issues by focusing on irrelevant matters like phone tapping case and giving leaks to select media houses to malign the reputation of former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao and the previous BRS government.

Gulf and Overseas Workers Welfare Board soon: CM Revanth Reddy

CM Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy addresses the Gulf workers union representatives on Tuesday.

Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy said the State government was proposing to set up a Gulf and Overseas Workers Welfare Board for the convenience of workers going abroad to eke out a livelihood.

“Due to the election code, the initiative got delayed. I promise that by September 17, the Welfare Board will be set up at Praja Bhavan and will be operated by a senior IAS officer,” Revanth Reddy told Gulf workers union representatives here on Tuesday.

Discussing issues being faced by Gulf and overseas workers, he said the State government would extend insurance coverage of Rs.5 lakh to Gulf workers on the lines of Rythu Bima for farmers. As for the welfare board, it would be equipped with a round the clock toll free number for workers to call in case of any issues.

A passport assistance centre would also be set up as part of the board’s operations. This apart, a one week training programme would be conducted for workers before they board flights for the Gulf to help them understand the rules and about the companies’ operations, the Chief Minister said.

Since the issue was connected with 15 lakh workers’ families, agents would be brought under legal liability. They would also be made to register their details and operations with the government to initiate any action in case of untoward incidents, he said.

When the representatives suggested a few measures, especially over welfare measures, he replied that already the State government had studied the Kerala and Philippines governments’ policy. Accordingly, a policy document was prepared and after the Lok Sabha elections, a meeting would be conducted by the State government to discuss the policy and seek recommendations from the unions for incorporating into the policy, he added.

Mango lovers in Hyderabad can rejoice, abundance supply makes choicest varieties affordable

Hyderabad: Great news for mango lovers in Hyderabad this summer! Thanks to the early arrival and abundant availability of the ‘king of fruits’ in the city, aficionados of this seasonal fruit will now have access to the choicest varieties at affordable price.

The mango supplies to the city started in February itself, a month before its regular arrival time and since then the supplies have been encouraging.

The fruit has arrived in huge quantities at the Batasingaram market in Hayathnagar, and also at Kushaiguda, Bowenpally, Jambagh and Gudimalkapur.

At the Batasingaram market, since the beginning of the season, 12,929 truck loads of mangoes have arrived.

The arrivals are from Mahabubnagar, Wanaparthy, Ranga Reddy, Khammam, Vikarabad, Nagarkurnool, Mancherial, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Warangal and Gadwal in Telangana while from Andhra Pradesh the fruit arrivals are from Ananthapur, Krishna, West Godavari and Kurnool districts.

“The local produce of Telugu States is transported to North India where there is huge demand for it. At least 60 per cent of the mango yield is sent to Delhi, Haryana, and other States by farmers because it fetches good prices for them,” says Batasingaram fruit market secretary Ch. Narsimha Reddy.

Good arrivals means, the average mango lover in Hyderabad now can taste different varieties of mangoes like Banganapalli, Kesar, Himayat, Totapari, Dasheri, Alphonso and several more.

“The supplies will continue till the month of June. Compared to last two years, this year, the arrivals have been very good,” says Narsimha Reddy. A kilogram of mangoes is now priced between Rs 120 and Rs 140. In the next few weeks, the prices will further reduce, and people can buy a kilogram of mangoes at a price of Rs 80 to Rs 100.
