Khammam: Congress factions clash over Ponguleti

Unruly scenes unfolded at Congress party meeting in Khammam on Tuesday.

Khammam: The fact that all is not well in the Khammam Congress was proved once again as different factions resorted to a verbal clash with ex-MP Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy as the focal point.

A meeting of key party leaders and cadres was organised at the party here on Tuesday. CLP leader Bhatti Vikramarka, senior leaders V Hanumantha Rao, Renuka Chowdary and the party election observer Arif Naseem Khan attended the meeting.

Things went wrong from the beginning of the meeting as followers of Rayala Nageswara Rao and Potla Nageswara Rao, who were expecting the party tickets for Palair and Kothagudem Assembly constituencies respectively, started slogans hailing their leaders as soon as Srinivas Reddy entered the meeting hall.

It continued during the ex-MP’s address as well and the ex-MP’s followers also responded in a similar way hailing their leader. Srinivas Reddy left the meeting hall soon after completing his address. Bhatti also went into another room at the party office to attend a conference call with the party national leaders, while the meeting was going on. It was said that Rayala and Potla were followers of Bhatti.

Meanwhile, when Hanumantha Rao was speaking, many workers started heated arguments. Many complained that newcomers were being given posts in the party while those working for the party for years together were neglected.

It was said that several leaders were unhappy over Srinivas Reddy getting Congress campaign committee co-convener post while his follower Muvva Vijaya Babu was made member of the manifesto committee. Renuka Chowdary commented that the sentiments of cadres were hurt.

Later speaking to the media, Potla Nageswara Rao made serious remarks against Srinivas Reddy while asserting that the latter would not be given Kothagudem ticket. Only seniors in the party have to be given priority and it was not good for Srinivas Reddy to claim a ticket wherever he wishes for.

Hyderabad: Bharat Rashtra Samithi working president and Minister KT Rama Rao said on Tuesday that the BJP was attempting to postpone elections in five States including Telangana by playing out ‘cheap political stunts’ like the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal, which in fact was indicative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his party’s fear of a defeat in those States.

The simultaneous election proposal, along with the move to rename India as Bharat, were all cheap tactics to divert public attention from pressing issues, including the Centre’s failed promises and potential electoral losses, he said.

The BJP’s apparent eagerness to delay the State elections was indicative of its fear of defeat in the elections in the five States, which could impact its performance in the 2024 national elections, he said, calling the BJP’s tenure a ‘disaster’ for India.

At the same time, Rama Rao said if elections were postponed, it would offer his party the opportunity to complete any pending projects before facing the electorate. However, he remained confident that when the time came, voters would render their judgment based on the government’s overall performance, dismissing the BJP’s diversionary tactics.

In an informal interaction with the media here on Tuesday, KT Rama Rao also lambasted the Modi administration for failing to deliver on key commitments related to housing, drinking water, and employment. These unfulfilled promises had forced the BJP to resort to non-issues in a bid to divert attention from their shortcomings.

“If the BJP government was genuinely interested in implementing simultaneous elections across the nation, no political party could obstruct it in Parliament, given the BJP’s substantial numerical advantage,” he said, also saying that the Congress and BJP were colluding with each other against the BRS.

He pointed to instances such as Rahul Gandhi skipping Gujarat during his Bharat Jodo Yatra and the selective scrutiny of BRS members by Central agencies, while no Congress leader was facing any such charges, as evidence of this collusion. He also questioned the outcome of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in Telangana, where both Madhu Yashki Goud and Ponnam Prabhakar from Congress lost their deposits in Nizamabad and Karimnagar constituencies, respectively, despite their significant support base.

Rama Rao refused to comment on the ongoing developments in Andhra Pradesh, asserting that they did not concern the BRS. As a national party, the BRS would concentrate on addressing issues of national significance that affect the country’s populace rather than individual incidents, he said.

Hyderabad: Keeping up with the development agenda of the BRS government, Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao will virtually inaugurate eight new government medical colleges on September 15, followed by the inauguration of the wet run of Palamuru Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Scheme (PRLIS) on September 16 and the Telangana National Integration Day celebrations on September 17.

In an informal interaction with the media here, BRS working president and Minister KT Rama Rao asserted that welfare and development were paramount for the State government. He reminded that the successive governments of the Congress and the TDP in erstwhile Andhra Pradesh established only two government medical colleges in Telangana in 65 years.

“But the BRS government has set up new government medical colleges and nursing colleges in every district in less than 10 years,” he said, adding that this was achieved without support from the Centre.

The Minister ridiculed the Opposition parties criticising the inauguration of the PRLIS despite the ongoing canal works. He reminded that the canal works of Sri Ram Sagar Project, the foundation of which was laid by former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in 1963, had continued till Telangana formation.

“The Opposition leaders who filed cases against the PRLIS in the name of deceased persons and delayed the project, are now questioning its inauguration. Instead, they should appreciate the State government for succeeding in ensuring irrigation water supply to 13-14 lakh acres in erstwhile Mahabubnagar and Rangareddy districts within a short span,” he said, adding that the construction of canals was an ongoing process.

Pre-sowing forecast 2023-24: Cotton prices expected to range from Rs 7,550 to 8,000 per quintal in Telangana

Pre-sowing forecast 2023-24: Cotton prices expected to range from Rs 7,550 to 8,000 per quintal in Telangana

Hyderabad: Going by the pre-sowing price forecast-2023-24, cotton is expected to fetch around Rs 7,550 – Rs 8,000 per quintal at the time of harvesting that commences toward the end of October and continues till February next year.

Cotton area in the State had come down a bit because of the seasonal conditions that were not in favour of the growers in certain pockets. The short fall in the sown area was in the order of two lakh acres. The decline is more or less in tune with the global perspective. Consequently , it could impact production as well as supplies marginally, thus adding to the overall demand.

Cotton picking, which has already commenced in some of the northern States, is likely to gain momentum in the State too towards the second or third week of November. The marketing season is likely to take off on a positive note.

Quality stocks from the farmers in certain markets of the State fetched up to Rs 11,500 to Rs 12,000 per quintal during the last marketing season. But the growers who continued to hold the stocks in hope of further rise in the price were in for a rude shock because of the sudden dip to below Rs 7,500 per quintal due to poor demand from the ginning mills and drop in exports.

Farmers are now disposing the stocks at the prevailing market price of Rs 6,500 to 7,500 after a long wait. No significant hike in the price could be expected in the beginning of the marketing season. There is no big variation in the projected production of cotton in China and USA, the two global competitors for India, according to R Vijay Kumari, Principal Investigator, Agriculture Market Intelligence Centre, Prof Jayashankar Agriculture University.

The centre has assessed the pre-sowing price forecast of cotton for the year 2023-24 expecting normal rainfall and an increase in crop area. It was predicted that the cotton price per quintal will be around Rs 7,550 – 8,000 at the time of harvesting (November 2023 to February 2024).

KTR cautions against interference of Andhra leaders in TS

Hyderabad: BRS working president and Minister KT Rama Rao cautioned the people of Telangana against interference in matters of the State by the Congress and the BJP, particularly by leaders who had opposed the State formation. He minced no words in terming the Telangana heads of both parties as mere “puppets” under the control of their central party leadership.

During an informal media interaction on Tuesday, Rama Rao stressed the need to ensure that Telangana’s development over the last one decade did not fall into the hands of those who had earlier opposed the State’s formation. He cited the example of KVP Ramachander Rao and YS Sharmila, who had vehemently opposed Telangana’s creation, but now were trying to pose as Telangana supporters and to interfere in the State politics.

The Minister also said former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, who previously tried to suppress the Telangana movement, was attempting to indirectly control BJP activities in the State. He characterised BJP State president Kishan Reddy as being “played” by Kiran Kumar Reddy and TPCC chief A Revanth Reddy as a pawn of KVP Ramachandra Rao.

“People of Telangana fought for our State to protect their self-respect, and I am confident they will ensure that these leaders who opposed Telangana are held accountable,” he said.

Rama Rao didn’t spare criticism for Kishan Reddy and Revanth Reddy, highlighting their lack of participation in both the Telangana Statehood movement and its subsequent development. He said they were influenced by their party’s central leadership and lacked commitment to Telangana, both during and after the State’s formation.

He pointed out Kishan Reddy’s decision not to resign to his MLA post during the Statehood movement and Revanth Reddy carrying a rifle to threaten the Telangana agitators. Rama Rao also noted that neither Congress nor BJP leaders from Telangana had questioned the Modi government’s denial of crucial projects and necessary funds for the State in the last decade.

Regarding the upcoming elections, the Minister urged the people not to be swayed by the empty promises of the Congress. He said the Congress party’s role in Telangana formation, was nothing short of the British seeking credit for India’s independence.

Rama Rao underlined Telangana’s stable leadership under Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao compared to the opposition’s inability to identify a chief ministerial candidate. He accused the opposition of receiving directives from Delhi and questioned their ability to serve the State’s interests.

The Minister criticised the Congress party for allegedly fomenting communal strife and resorting to violence to change Chief Ministers in erstwhile Andhra Pradesh. He urged the people to carefully consider their choice. “Do you want the BJP, which introduced contentious laws, or the BRS government, which focused on welfare and development? Unfortunately, we must compete with emotionally and intellectually challenged opposition parties,” he added.

The BRS working president expressed confidence that the party would secure a third consecutive term with more than 90 seats in the upcoming Assembly elections, with the opposition vying for the second place. He acknowledged minor dissent within the party but remained confident it would be resolved and assured that promising opportunities awaited leaders like Athram Sakku, who did not secure an MLA ticket.

Regarding Left parties, Rama Rao disclosed that discussions on seat sharing were held, but the arithmetics over seat-sharing did not match. However, the BRS had huge respect for the Left parties, and would continue to work with them in countering communal politics.
