Followers of Potla Nageswara Rao, Rayala Nageswara Rao and former MP Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy had resorted to verbal clashes during a meeting on Tuesday. The same was repeated on Wednesday but in a much more violent manner.

The clashes occurred in the presence of the party’s parliamentary constituency in-charge Arif Naseem Khan during Sathupalli Assembly constituency level meeting. It was attended by former minister Renuka Chowdary and the party district president P Durga Prasad.

While the meeting was going on the followers, K Manavata Roy and Matta Dayanand Kumar, who were expecting Congress ticket to contest for Sathupalli Assembly seat, started arguing with each other and shouted slogans hailing their leaders.

The arguments heated up; they started jostling and manhandling each other. Some irate workers threw plastic chairs at their rival and beat up with chappals while some damaged the chairs showing their anger.

Several party workers were injured with few sustaining bleeding injuries and broken limbs as the party in-charge Naseem Khan and Renuka Chowdary remained mute spectators as the rival factions fought with each other.

Earlier speaking to the media, Naseem Khan maintained that there were some minor issues in the district Congress and they would be sorted out. He claimed that Congress was going to win 10 out of 10 Assembly seats in erstwhile Khammam as well the parliament seat.

He said that the party cadres were very enthusiastic to work for the party’s victory in the ensuing Assembly elections. Congress would come to power in 2024 elections, he added.

Hyderabad: The cotton prices may rule above the minimum support price this time and the administration is fully prepared for the marketing season that is to commence towards the end of October or early November, said Director of Agriculture Marketing G Lakshmi Bai on Wednesday.

The centre had fixed a minimum support price of Rs 7,020 per quintal for the long staple cotton variety that is widely grown in the State. Cotton with long and lustrous fiber has been fetching a god price.

The MSP for the medium staple cotton was fixed at Rs 6,620 per quintal. On the whole there was an increase of Rs 540 to 640 per quintal over the previous year. The CCI had a limited role in cotton purchases last year as the prevailing prices were high compared to the MSP.

More or less 2022-2023 was a good year for the cotton growers as they were able to sell their good and outstanding produce fetching as high as Rs 12,000 per quintal. But the farmers found themselves in distress because of the dip in prices subsequntly. The drop in cotton area in the state was in the order of five lakh acres this year, said the Marketing Director.

Hopefully the season will start on a positive note. If the prices are below the MSP, the CCI would come into the picture and make purchases from the growers. The process for notification of the purchase centres was already on. The ginning mills fulfilling the norms of the CCI would make it to the list. The Marketing Department has always been with the farmers in respect of all their crops as desired by the government, she added.

Telangana Assembly elections: BJP plans to use Sanatana Dharma controversy to attack Opposition

BJP State president G Kishan Reddy, while addressing party functionaries recently, had asked them to project the BRS, Congress and AIMIM as anti-Sanatana Dharma parties

Telangana Assembly elections: BJP plans to use Sanatana Dharma controversy to attack Opposition

Hyderabad: The BJP, which has been struggling to be in the race for the forthcoming polls to the State assembly, is now planning to use Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and Minister Udayanidhi Stalin’s controversial comments on Sanatana Dharma as a weapon to target the BRS, Congress and the AIMIM during its poll campaign.

BJP State president G Kishan Reddy, while addressing party functionaries recently, had asked them to project the BRS, Congress and AIMIM as anti-Sanatana Dharma parties and use Sanatana Dharma as an electoral ammunition to target the opposition. He reportedly asked leaders to unite the people in the name of Hindutva and to bring the BJP to save Hindu religion.

However, political analysts believe that the move will prove counterproductive as Dalit communities and OBCs for whom caste discrimination has been a reality may distance themselves from the saffron party. In fact, the BJP under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been popularising Hindutva by mostly fuelling anti-Muslim sentiment and never used Sanatana Dharma while dealing with weaker sections.

The BJP’s victories in the last two Lok Sabha elections have been attributed to the party’s successful attempts to win over a substantial section of OBC and Dalit communities, and if it tried to make Sanatana Dharma an issue in the forthcoming polls in Telangana, it may further affect its prospects in the ensuing assembly polls. Most of the weaker section communities believe that Sanatana Dharma encourages caste system and have been keeping away forces supporting it.

Interestingly, even BJP leaders belonging to weaker sections believe that since the party is trying to come to power in the State, any overt Hindutva stance could prove detrimental to its prospects.

With Telangana having a considerable population belonging to weaker sections and backward class communities, the plan of BJP to make Sanatana Dharma as a poll issue is likely to benefit its rival party especially BRS which enjoys massive support among these communities. By using Sanatana Dharma to attack opposition parties, the BJP is likely to get marginalised in the State and pay a heavy political price, a BJP leader belonging to the weaker section said.
