Iran women’s volleyball team secured a historic fourth-place finish at the 2026 AVC Women’s Volleyball Asian Championship after losing 3-0 to Japan in the bronze-medal match in Tianjin, China.
Japan, ranked sixth in the world, won 25-21, 25-16 and 26-24 on Sunday to claim the bronze medal. Iran, ranked 38th, nevertheless completed the most successful campaign in the history of its women’s national team at the Asian championship.
The result capped a landmark tournament for Iran. The team had never previously reached the Asian Championship semifinals before beating Indonesia 3-1 in the quarterfinals on Friday to break into the continental top four for the first time.
Iran then lost 3-0 to host China in the semifinals on Saturday.
Despite the two losses, Iran achieved the target set for its women’s volleyball program in 2026 by reaching the final four.

The Asian championship featured 12 national teams and was held in Tianjin from Aug. 21-30. The tournament carried significant international stakes, with the champion earning a quota place at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the top three teams securing qualification for the 2027 FIVB Volleyball World Cup.
Japan entered the bronze-medal match as the higher-ranked side and eventually used its experience to close out the contest. Iran pushed Japan in the opening and third sets but could not force a fourth.
Japan’s victory also secured its place at the 2027 World Cup. The Japanese side had lost 3-1 to Thailand in the semifinals on Saturday.
For Iran, fourth place represents the culmination of a development project launched by the volleyball federation in 2024 with the goal of breaking into Asia’s top four in 2026.
The program included targeted investment and changes to the national team setup. Iran also brought in South Korean coach Lee Do-hee as part of its efforts to develop the women’s program.

Iran had climbed from 80th to around 40th in the world rankings following a series of improved results before the Asian championship. The team entered the tournament seeking to turn that progress into a historic continental result. It did so in Tianjin.
The victory over Indonesia in the quarterfinals ended years of waiting for a place among Asia’s elite. The fourth-place finish now stands as the highest Asian championship result achieved by Iran’s women’s national volleyball team.
