Three new MMTS stations proposed in Hyderabad to improve suburban rail connectivity

Hyderabad: Rail users in the city may soon get improved suburban rail connectivity, with plans likely underway to establish three new MMTS stations at Loyola College in Alwal, Anandbagh and Moula Ali.

The proposal, which has long been demanded by passengers, has been forwarded by the South Central Railway (SCR) authorities to the Railway Board for approval. A response from the board on the matter is awaited by the local railway authorities.

The move comes amid increasing passenger traffic on the Ghatkesar–Sanathnagar MMTS corridor, where the need for additional stations has been felt for several years. In fact, there were plans nearly a decade ago to build six new stations along this stretch.

“Following repeated representations from commuter groups, railway officials conducted feasibility inspections, particularly at level crossing points, to assess the viability of the proposed locations. A detailed report was subsequently submitted to higher authorities,” said Mohd Noor, General Secretary, Train Travellers Association.

One of the key proposals is at Anandbagh, where a significant gap exists between Charlapalli and Neredmet stations. Despite guidelines suggesting that suburban railway stations should ideally be located every 2 km, there is currently no station in this stretch.

Residents of Malkajgiri and nearby areas are forced to travel to either Charlapalli or Neredmet to board trains, causing inconvenience. A station at Anandbagh is expected to ease this burden. Similarly, the proposed station near Loyola College in Alwal is expected to benefit daily commuters along the busy route, while another station near the railway quarters in Moula Ali could serve around 2,000 residents in the vicinity, enabling better access to MMTS services.

Meanwhile, the Train Travellers Association has urged the SCR authorities to take immediate steps for the establishment of a new railway station at Alugadda Bavi, to be named as Rail Nilayam Railway Station. A proposal for this station was earlier mooted, with the objective of improving rail connectivity and passenger convenience in and around Secunderabad.

With the recent diversion of trains from Kazipet and Nalgonda towards Kurnool via Kacheguda, passengers of Secunderabad are facing inconvenience, as they are forced to travel an additional distance, resulting in loss of time and money. In this context, the proposed Rail Nilayam Station at Alugadda Bavi will serve as an important terminal or halt point for diverted trains.

Yadadri temple town to get MMTS connectivity:

The much-awaited MMTS rail connectivity to the temple town of Yadadri is expected to be set in motion, with works expected to commence soon. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to formally launch the project during his visit to the city later this month, giving a major push to suburban rail expansion in the city outskirts. The local railway authorities are awaiting confirmation from the Prime Minister’s Office in this regard.

The project, which is part of MMTS phase-II, is being executed by South Central Railway (SCR), and the railway authorities have set a target to complete the works within three years and make it operational for citizens. The proposed 33-km stretch from Secunderabad to Raigir through Charlapalli and Ghatkesar is planned to be developed at an estimated cost of Rs 430 crore.
