Kumar Mohanty, former national ball badminton player from Hyderabad, passed away at 74. He represented Hyderabad State for nearly 25 years, served as coach and selection committee member, and is remembered for his skill, resilience, and contributions to Indian ball badminton

Hyderabad: Kumar Mohanty, former national ball badminton player, passed away here. He was 74 and is survived by a daughter and a son.

Former Hyderabad State Ball Badminton Association secretary K Vijaya Prasad Reddy, also vice-president of Ball Badminton Federation of India, said Mohanty represented Hyderabad State (Telangana players used to represent Hyderabad as a State in those days) for nearly 25 years before retiring as Sports Officer in BHEL.


Mohanty will be remembered for his skill and for winning matches from seemingly lost situations on countless occasions, helping the State team secure many championships, including Nationals.

He also served as a coach and member of selection committees.

Former Railways captain Nizar expressed condolences, recalling Mohanty as an “extraordinary teammate when we played in the 1991 Guntur Nationals for CPESCB.”

Former Indian Railways players J. Srinivas, Raja Rao, and VV Ramana, Telangana State Secretary, were among those who conveyed condolences.
