Hyderabad: Construction of a four-lane steel road-over-bridge near Lingampally railway station is set to begin soon, offering relief to thousands of commuters in Hyderabad’s IT corridor and western suburbs.
Railway authorities dropped the proposed Bowstring structure for crossing the railway span and opted for a steel RoB after a joint inspection with Cyberabad Municipal Corporation officials. The earlier design had considered the proposed doubling or tripling of tracks at the station, a senior CMC engineering official said.
CMC chose a steel superstructure instead of conventional concrete to accelerate construction and minimise disruption to train services and local traffic. The proposed 2km RoB, from Gulmohar Junction to BHEL Junction, will include a two-lane up-ramp from Gulmohar Junction.
Following a meeting with Hyderabad Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority, CMC revised the blueprint to extend the Gachibowli-BHEL arm of Serilingampally RoB beyond Gulmohar Park junction. The extension is intended to take Gachibowli-to-BHEL traffic directly and reduce crowding on the existing Nallagandla RoB.
Cyberabad Traffic officials also identified a bottleneck near Taranagar on the road from Serilingampally RoB to BHEL. The stretch requires widening from the existing 60/80 feet to 100 feet under the approved Road Development Plan. The estimate was consequently modified by extending the two-lane Gachibowli-side up-ramp towards BHEL beyond Gulmohar Junction.
The project, including junction improvements, will cost Rs 308 crore and is aimed to be completed within 24 hours, a CMC official said.
Tellapur RWA expects easier commuting
The RoB is expected to benefit residents and IT professionals in rapidly expanding Tellapur, who face delays at Lingampally railway station and the flood-prone underpass. During monsoon downpours, the underpass floods, halting traffic and stranding commuters. Reaching Gachibowli, Hi Tech City or the Financial District can take an additional 15 to 20 minutes merely to cross the railway track.
Benefits of the steel RoB Project:
The RoB provides relief to commuters from inundation of the existing RUB during rains and traffic congestion due to insufficient width and height of the existing RUB.
Traffic relief on Nallagandla ROB.
