Hyderabad faces summer water shortage as Singur and Manjeera supplies fall short. HMWSSB is preparing contingency measures to partly offset an estimated 100 MGD deficit, with plans to draw an additional 60 MGD from alternative sources to protect consumers across the city

Hyderabad: With summer approaching, Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) faces questions over whether current reserves can serve the city’s 15 lakh water consumers until summer ends amid groundwater depletion.
Even though a tough task lies ahead, the HMWSSB officials are confident that strict consumption cuts and alternative sourcing will prevent widespread summer dry spells as water levels in Hyderabad’s drinking water storage sources rapidly approach critical levels. “The contingency strategies are being deployed to guarantee uninterrupted supply,” a senior HMWSSB official admitted.
HMWSSB officials have already warned of a 100 million gallons per day (MGD) shortfall from the assured 120 MGD from Singur and Manjeera sources after water levels dipped sharply. Plans are underway to compensate for the shortage. This shortage directly risks supply disruptions for over 3.5 lakh connections running across western corridors from Patancheru to Narsingi.
“The Water Board currently draws nearly 100 MGD from Singur. Overall, HMWSSB supplies 580 MGD from all drinking water sources to meet demand in the Core Urban Economy Region, comprising GHMC, CMC and MMC,” a senior HMWSSB official who is handling the CURE area water supply network told Telangana Today.
The official also said water from all drinking water sources, except Singur and Manjeera, could be managed until the end of summer based on storage capacities.
Meanwhile, the HMWSSB plans to draw an additional 60 MGD from Godavari, Krishna, Osman Sagar, and Himayat Sagar (Twin reservoirs) to partly offset a 100 MGD shortfall after Singur and Manjeera supplies stopped, affecting 3.5 lakh consumers.
The Water Board is preparing a blueprint to draw 60 MGD of Godavari and Krishna water through the existing water supply network to reach affected areas, due to a shortfall in Singur and Manjeera water.
