Hyderabad: Acting on a news report published in these columns on October 31 regarding illegal groundwater extraction in several areas of Tellapur, Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams conducted raids on Monday and dismantled illegal borewell connections, water-storage structures and pipelines.
The crackdown followed a protest on October 31, when local residents took to the streets against an alleged illegal water mafia. According to Tellapur Neighbourhood Association (TeNA) president Ramana Eshwarigari, revenue officials were deployed promptly after receiving information about the demonstration and seized the illegal borewells.
Earlier, on October 31, a TeNA delegation had met the Mandal Revenue Officer to demand immediate action against the unauthorised groundwater extraction.
Eshwarigari noted that HYDRAA deployed earthmovers to dismantle the illegal borewells, storage structures and connecting pipelines. TeNA has appealed to local residents to remain vigilant and continue monitoring the situation until all illegal water extraction points are fully seized and authorities take decisive action.
