Hyderabad: The night skies over Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana are putting on a spectacular cosmic show for amateur stargazers in the city. The final weeks of 2026, between November and December, are offering a rare double feature, including a striking pre-dawn planetary alignment and a pair of major meteor showers that can be viewed in clear skies over Hyderabad.

The celestial show begins with Saturn and its famed gas rings, which will remain bright in the evening sky throughout November. Amateur astronomers using even a modest telescope can easily spot Saturn and its famous ring system.

Before sunrise, the planetary action intensifies. Stretched across the eastern horizon, an eye-catching four-planet parade brings Mercury, Venus, Mars and Jupiter together in a rare alignment. The unique celestial event can be spotted with the naked eye.

The real fireworks, however, belong to the winter meteor showers. Mid-November brings the peak of the Leonids, famous for producing some of the fastest-moving shooting stars in the solar system. While city terraces offer glimpses of the brighter streaks, the main event arrives in mid-December with the Geminids.

Considered the crown jewel of annual meteor displays, the Geminids peak on the night of December 13 to 14, delivering up to 150 multi-coloured meteors per hour. Interestingly, this year’s display coincides with an early-setting crescent moon, leaving pitch-dark conditions ideal for naked-eye viewing.

For stargazers in Hyderabad, catching the full show requires a brief escape from urban light pollution and a trip to darker rural pockets or the outskirts of the city for optimal viewing. To check out the meteor showers, one does not even need a telescope, as the naked eye provides the widest field of view to watch meteors streaking through the Hyderabadi skies.
