Hyderabad: An IndiGo flight from Delhi to Chennai was diverted to Hyderabad on Sunday after smoke was detected from a passenger’s personal electronic device, prompting the cabin crew to extinguish the fire. All passengers and crew members were safe.

Flight 6E6115, operated by an Airbus A321-251N, landed safely at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad on October 11, 2026, following the incident.

A video recorded by a passenger on a mobile phone showed passengers attempting to douse the flames in the overhead luggage compartment by pressing their bags against the fire. The exact time and location at which the fire broke out have not been independently confirmed.

In a statement, IndiGo said smoke had been detected from a passenger’s personal electronic device. The cabin crew responded promptly and brought the situation under control. The pilots diverted the aircraft to Hyderabad in accordance with established safety protocols.

The airline arranged an alternative aircraft to take passengers to Chennai.

“We regret the inconvenience caused to our customers due to this unforeseen situation and are making all efforts to minimise it, including offering refreshments and sharing timely updates. At IndiGo, the safety of our customers and crew remains our top priority,” the airline said.

The scheduled departure time from Delhi was 1.10 pm, while the aircraft took off at 1.30 pm. It was scheduled to arrive in Chennai at 4 pm.
