Nalgonda: Worried that their standing crops could wither due to inadequate power supply, farmers in several areas of the erstwhile Nalgonda district are being compelled to use diesel generators to pump water to their fields.
The desperate measure is substantially increasing cultivation costs for farmers already struggling to protect their crops. Ironically, Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy hails from the erstwhile Nalgonda district.
Farmers without access to wells and canals are already relying on water tankers to irrigate their fields. Those with wells are now being forced to use diesel generators to pump water due to insufficient electricity supply.
The situation is particularly prevalent in several mandals of Suryapet and Yadadri-Bhongir districts. Farmers in Bollampally mandal of Suryapet district are using diesel generators to save their standing crops. Similar conditions prevail in Kalmalacheruvu village of Gareddipally mandal.
“We have no choice but to use diesel generators to save our crops. There is a well in our field, but we have no power to operate the borewell and pump water. As a last resort, we are using a generator,” a farmer from Suryapet said in a video circulating on social media.
Farmers are appealing to the government to intervene and help them overcome the crisis.
“All we request is that the government supply quality power for another 15 to 20 days. The crops are at a critical stage and harvesting will commence. If water is not supplied, they will dry up and farmers will suffer huge losses,” a member of the Telangana Farmers Federation said.
