Bank manager’s alert saves Hyderabad retiree from losing another Rs 2 lakh in nude video call scam

Hyderabad: A visit to the bank turned into an important intervention for a retired employee from AS Rao Nagar in Kushaiguda, who had allegedly fallen prey to a nude video call scam and had already lost nearly Rs 18 lakh.

Just as he was preparing to transfer another Rs 2 lakh to the fraudsters, the bank manager sensed something suspicious and alerted the police, who helped protect the remaining Rs 80 lakh in the victim’s account.

According to information available, the fraudsters had allegedly recorded a personal video call and used the screen recording to blackmail the retired employee, threatening to upload it to social media. Fearing public humiliation, the victim reportedly gave in to their demands and transferred money.

The situation took a turn when the victim recently visited the bank to make another payment. Sensing that something was amiss, the branch manager alerted the police instead of allowing the transaction to proceed without scrutiny.

Police officials reached the bank and explained to the victim that he had been targeted by cybercriminals. Their timely intervention prevented the next transfer and helped safeguard his remaining savings.

Cybercrime authorities warned that cybercriminals often exploit victims’ fear of social embarrassment to extort money through threats involving private video recordings.

They advised people not to panic or make payments when faced with such threats.

They said victims should preserve evidence, including call records and transaction details, and report the matter to the police immediately.
