Khammam: All is set for recognised union election in Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) in erstwhile Khammam district.
Around 1,791 workers across seven depots in Khammam district are set to exercise their right to vote on October 9. The union elections taking place after a gap of nearly ten years have generated considerable excitement and anticipation.
Key issues on the agenda include the merger of the RTC with the government, implementation of the Pay Revision Commission (PRC) recommendations, payment of wage arrears, staff shortages and job security besides reducing work pressure resulting from the introduction of free bus travel for women under Mahalakshmi scheme.
A topic drawing particular attention in these elections is the role of new voters. There has been a gap of nearly ten years since the last recognition union elections were held in 2016. A large number of newly recruited employees have been added to the voters’ list during this period.
As many as 12 trade unions are in the electoral fray. These include the Employees Union, Telangana Mazdoor Union, Staff and Workers Federation, National Mazdoor Union, Karmika Sangh, Karmika Parishad, Bahujan Workers Union, Telangana RTC Workers Union, Staff and Workers Union, Samajika Telangana Mazdoor Union, Bahujan Karmika Union, and Telangana Jathiya Mazdoor Union.
Though there are 12 unions contesting the recognised union elections, the primary competition is between two alliances. The Telangana RTC
Workers union (Ashwathama Reddy faction) and the Staff and Workers Federation (SWF) are contesting as one alliance.
The Employees Union, National Mazdoor union (NMU), and Telangana Mazdoor union (TMU Thomas Reddy faction) are contesting as another alliance. The election results are expected on October 17.
