Telangana to recruit university assistant professors without screening test

Hyderabad: Even as the Telangana Council of Higher Education (TGCHE) proposed a screening test, the State government has decided to recruit assistant professors for universities without a test.

The recruitment will have three stages, with Part-A involving initial screening, Part-B assessing domain knowledge through a demonstration lecture, and Part-C being an interview. The three stages will carry 100 marks in total.

Part-A will assess academic record and research performance based on Table-3 of the UGC Regulations, 2018. Though the assessment carries 100 marks under the UGC rules, the scores will later be scaled down to 50 marks.

For instance, a PhD carries 30 marks under the UGC rules. This will be reduced to 15 marks. The weightage for graduation, post-graduation, NET, JRF and research publications will also be reduced by half. Based on their merit, candidates will be shortlisted in a 1:12 ratio for each post, following the reservation roster, for the next stage. The TGCHE is likely to be entrusted with screening the applications.

These UGC regulations will be incorporated into GO MS 21, and the government will shortly issue an amended order. Earlier, qualifications such as degree, postgraduate qualification, PhD and research papers considered under Part-A were also included in Part-B in GO MS 21. This had created confusion among aspirants.

Under Part-B, which carries 30 marks, candidates will have to give a demo lecture before a university screening committee. Their teaching ability will be assessed based on the demonstration. Candidates will then be shortlisted in the ratio of 1:5 for final interview to be conducted by a university selection committee and carry 20 marks.

“As a large number of candidates are expected to apply, we urged the government for a screening test. However, it has decided to conduct recruitment without a screening test. To shortlist candidates, the government has decided to incorporate the provisions of Table-3 of the UGC Regulations, 2018 into GO MS 21 concerning teachers’ recruitment in universities. Amendments to the order will be issued shortly. A notification is also expected shortly, and recruitment may be completed by the end of March or April,” sources said.
