Karimnagar: A Dalit sarpanch attempted suicide, alleging that he was harassed by Choppadandi MLA Medipalli Satyam and his accomplices at Gangadhara mandal headquarters on Sunday, triggering a flutter in the district.
Malyala Thirupathi, sarpanch of Kondayapalli village, along with his children, attempted to end his life by consuming pesticide near the statue of Dr BR Ambedkar in Gangadhara. He was immediately shifted to a hospital in Karimnagar. His condition was said to be stable.
Speaking to mediapersons, Thirupathi alleged that Satyam targeted him for raising questions during a recent general body meeting. “Accomplices of Satyam harassed me by levelling baseless allegations against me. They threatened to implicate me. False cases were booked against me,” he alleged. He also claimed that he was facing a threat to his life.
Thirupathi further alleged that certain persons were abusing him by referring to his caste and that the police were remaining mute spectators. Earlier, Thirupathi released a death statement on social media platforms on Saturday, holding Satyam responsible for his death.
