Lal Bahadur Shastri Jayanti is observed every year on October 2 to commemorate the birth anniversary of India’s second Prime Minister. Known for his humility, integrity and dedication to public service, Shastri played a significant role in shaping India during a challenging period.
Born Lal Bahadur Shrivastava, he dropped his caste surname at a young age to distance himself from the caste system. The title ‘Shastri’, meaning scholar, was an academic degree awarded to him by Kashi Vidyapeeth in 1925.
His iconic slogan, “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan”, highlighted the vital contributions of India’s soldiers and farmers. The day is observed to remember his life, leadership and enduring contribution to the nation.
