Hyderabad: Amid objections from house owners and heavy police deployment, demolitions continued for the second day in Maddur town of Narayanpet district on Tuesday. Maddur is part of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s Kodangal Assembly constituency.
Authorities are demolishing houses and commercial establishments as part of the Maddur-Chintaldinne road widening works. Equipped with earthmovers, officials continued the demolitions, leaving 19 families without shelter.
Residents and property owners alleged that the demolitions were being carried out without the announcement of compensation. Locals also alleged that the road was being widened to facilitate better connectivity to private lands spread over 200 acres, according to reports.
Anticipating trouble, a heavy police force was deployed in Maddur for the second consecutive day. Police allegedly took residents to the station when they tried to stop the demolition of a local school, the reports said.
The affected residents, many of them left in tears, alleged that their homes were razed while their belongings were still inside.
Former BRS MLA Patnam Narender Reddy, along with party leaders, visited the site and consoled the affected families. Later, they staged a protest and raised slogans against the government.
The BRS cadre questioned the need for road widening in a village where not even a bus or an auto-rickshaw could pass through, according to them. Despite the tense atmosphere and objections from residents, officials continued with the demolitions.
