Hyderabad: Active thunderstorm conditions prevailing across Hyderabad on Tuesday evening triggered severe weather warnings from weather agencies and research institutions, urging people to remain on high alert.
The Damini Lightning Alert mobile application, developed by the Ministry of Earth Sciences and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), indicated that multiple lightning strikes were detected in close proximity to the city centre and travelled towards suburban regions, including Miyapur and Ibrahimpatnam.
The app’s GPS-based tracking system registered localised strike clusters, activating emergency red alert banners for residents within the high-risk radius. The platform’s timeline indicated frequent discharges occurring within the past 5 to 20 minutes, signalling an intense spell of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning.
Authorities advised the general public to seek safe, indoor shelter immediately and avoid open spaces, bodies of water and tall structures until the severe weather passes.
Along with the lightning alerts, the Tuesday evening local forecast from IMD, Hyderabad, indicated a generally cloudy sky with expectations of light to moderate rain or thundershowers. The IMD forecast said that such conditions could occasionally feature intense spells accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kmph in parts of the city towards the evening and night.
The IMD recorded a maximum temperature of 33 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 24.6 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. Surface winds were predicted to come from the north-west at speeds of 8 to 10 kmph, indicating the prevalence of the present weather conditions, including thunderstorms, gusty winds and lightning.
