Hyderabad: The cool, breezy weather that signals the transition from the southwest monsoon into autumn and, later, winter, during September is missing in Hyderabad. Instead of maximum temperatures settling down at around a mild 29 degrees Celsius, which is the norm for this time of year, people in Hyderabad find themselves trapped in suffocating weather conditions.
The morning temperatures have been consistently higher by at least 3 degrees Celsius to 4 degrees Celsius, along with higher humidity. As a result, the weather in the past few days frequently reminded people in Telangana of the hard days of summer.
The unseasonal surge in temperatures, according to TSDPS data, pushed mercury levels on Wednesday to 39.5 degrees Celsius at Gurrampode in Nalgonda, which was just 0.1 degrees Celsius less than State’s all-time September temperature record of 39.6 degrees Celsius set at Konijerla in Khammam on September 23, 2024.
While IMD, Hyderabad temperature data recorded extreme September heat of around 36.5 degrees Celsius in the year 2015, newer hyper-local tracking networks of TSDPS indicated neighborhood temperatures pushing past 37 degrees Celsius in the last few days.
“For the past several days, maximum temperatures have been more than normal by 3 to 4 degrees. Since this is the rainy season, there is moisture in the air. Due to the increase in temperature, the air holds more moisture, whereas when temperatures are lower, it cannot hold this high humidity. So, due to the rise in temperatures, moisture levels have gone up. Therefore, Hyderabad is experiencing that oppressive, moisture-laden heat,” Senior Duty Officer, IMD, Hyderabad, told ‘Telangana Today’.
The weather official pointed out that there could be many reasons for the present weather condition, including El Niño. “The monsoons this year have been weak, and temperatures are rising because of various factors, including El Niño. There are chances of thunderstorms for the next few days across Telangana. However, even after thundershowers, we can’t say that temperatures will go down permanently. The rain will bring a temporary drop, but until a steady seasonal shift sets in, the heat and humidity can always bounce back,” he cautioned.
The present weather conditions are part of a broader macro-trend highlighted in national weather bulletins’ outlooks by IMD, New Delhi, which had flagged widespread September temperature anomalies and sub-normal rainfall patterns across peninsular India, where Telangana is located.
