Hyderabad: Several retired employees of the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) were taken into custody by police on Tuesday when they attempted to stage a protest near the Telangana Legislative Assembly, demanding the release of their long-pending dues.
The retired employees, who gathered to press for payment of salary arrears, leave encashment and other retirement benefits, tried to move towards the Assembly to draw the government’s attention to their grievances.
Police personnel intervened and took the protesters into custody before shifting them to a nearby police station.
The retirees have been repeatedly seeking clearance of dues that they say have remained pending for several years.
In June, hundreds of retired TGSRTC employees staged a protest at Bus Bhavan demanding arrears relating to the 2017 and 2021 pay revisions and leave encashment. They said individual dues ranged from around Rs.5 lakh to Rs. 10 lakh and alleged that several retired employees had died without receiving their arrears.
The issue has continued to figure in protests in recent months. On September 5, retired RTC employees held a protest at Dharna Chowk in Hyderabad and demanded immediate payment of their pending dues, with organisers urging the government and RTC management to address the financial difficulties faced by retired workers.
