Mamata Banerjee’s niece found dead in Birbhum, probe underway

Kolkata: TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee’s niece, Bristi Mukherjee, was found hanging at her residence in West Bengal’s Birbhum district on Tuesday, police said.

The body of Bristi Mukherjee, 28, the daughter of Banerjee’s maternal cousin Nihar Mukherjee, was recovered from a room on the second floor of her house in Kusumba village in the Rampurhat area on Tuesday afternoon, a senior officer said.

Nihar Mukherjee had previously served as the Trinamool Congress president of the Rampurhat-I block.

“Bristi Mukherjee’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination. An investigation is underway. The circumstances leading to the death will be established after the post-mortem examination and other procedural inquiries,” the officer said.

According to family members, Bristi Mukherjee had been undergoing treatment for depression for the past few years.

She had lost her Group C job following a court order cancelling recruitments in government-aided schools over alleged corruption, they said.

She was also undergoing divorce proceedings, which had added to her distress in recent months, family members said.

“It could be a case of suicide. An investigation has been launched to ascertain the exact cause of death,” another officer said.
