Budaun: An 18-year-old youth was killed and his friend critically injured when a speeding truck ran over their motorcycle here on Thursday, police said.
The two friends, who were recently shortlisted for recruitment as Agniveers in the Indian Army, were returning home after their physical training and running practice session in the morning, when the truck carrying crushed stone hit their bike on the Bisauli-Asafpur road.
Tarun Yadav, a resident of Gulariya village, died on the spot while his friend Arpit sustained critical injuries.
Tarun was the only son of Manoj Yadav, who works as a driver at the Bisauli agricultural produce market. The news of his death has devastated the family.
Arpit was given primary treatment and later referred to a higher medical centre in Bareilly due to the severity of his injuries, police said.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural) Hridesh Kumar Katheria said the truck driver fled the spot after the accident and efforts are underway to trace him.
