Hyderabad: Anjaiah Nagar in Gachibowli was a quiet, little-known residential pocket until Saturday, when an illegally built seven-storey apartment collapsed, killing two migrant workers.
With scores of commercial establishments, malls and multiplexes and MNCs engaged in IT and ITES dotting the IT corridor, Anjaiah Nagar offered affordable hostels and paying guest accommodation for the work force. With buildings here carving out small sharing accommodations, the place was favoured by the migrant workers from other districts and states.
Anjaiah Nagar was named after the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister T Anjaiah who during his tenure allotted the government land to the poor families here. The extent of these plots was between 50 and 100 sq. yards which were later regularized during the tenure of the then Chief Minister, Y S Rajasekhara Reddy as part of the building regularisation scheme, said a local builder.
Anjaiah Nagar is nestled in the heart of Gachibowli, with Cyber Towers, IKEA, Tech Mahindra, Financial District among other employment avenues, are located within a radius of 1 km to 5 km.
Apart from students, employees including housekeeping staff, sales boys and girls, and migrant workers stay in these hostels most of which also offer dinner, at affordable pricing, said residents of Anjaiah Nagar.
