Adilabad: The BRS cadres staged protests against the alleged attempt of the State government to cancel the Kalyana Lakshmi scheme across the erstwhile Adilabad district on Monday.
The cadres staged sit-ins on roads in district centres and towns, opposing the government’s move to scrap the initiative. They said that the government was intentionally hatching conspiracies to scrap various welfare schemes introduced by the BRS, including Kalyana Lakshmi, affecting brides from poor families. They said that the government was citing an order of the High Court.
The agitating leaders and activists opined that Kalyana Lakshmi used to be a boon to financially weak families, but the State government was trying to stop the scheme. They demanded that the initiative be continued. They found fault with the government for not filing a counter affidavit supporting its version to continue the scheme.
The agitating leaders recalled that the then BRS government enhanced financial support from Rs 51,000 to Rs 1,00,116, bearing a financial burden of Rs 13,000 crore. They recounted that the government had extended the scheme even during the Covid-19 health crisis and supported poor families. They charged that the Congress did not realise its promise to give 10 grams of gold to beneficiaries.
The cadres further said that the Congress duped the public by failing to keep its poll promises even after completing over two years in office. They demanded that the government continue the scheme despite the financial implications. They later submitted representations to Tahsildars, seeking continuation of the scheme.
