Ex-nuclear negotiator for the United States, Ernest Moniz, has condemned US President Donald Trump’s decision to launch war on Iran as a “big mistake.”
Trump’s decision to pursue all-out war with Iran was “a big mistake” and has placed the US in a cul-de-sac that will be hard to escape from, Moniz said in an interview published on Friday in the Financial Times.
The US nuclear negotiator mocked Trump for repeatedly claiming he had won the war and gained full control of the Strait of Hormuz.
Moniz said the world must wait and see how the US is going to get out of this dead-end it’s stuck in, insisting that the odds are stacked against Trump and his administration.
“We’ll see how all this turns out … Iran has the home-court advantage. And home-court advantages have not been working out so well for us in Vietnam and Afghanistan,” he stated.
In the meantime, the president’s approval rating has hit a record low even as he keeps promising Americans cash payments to make up for the economic pressure from rising cost of living resulting from the war and inefficiency of the Trump administration in governing affairs.
Media reports say rising fuel prices in the United States are pushing Trump’s approval ratings down, plunging his popularity rate to record lows ahead of midterm elections in November.
Experts say skyrocketing fuel prices are contributing to the cost-of-living crisis in the US, alongside other factors such as the globally accepted illegitimacy of the Trump war on Iran and its unpopularity among the majority of Americans, culminating in mounting pressure on Trump to negotiate a deal with Iran.
The illegal US-Israeli aggression on the country began on February 28 and came to a halt under a ceasefire on April 8.
On June 17, Tehran and Washington signed an Islamabad-brokered Memorandum of Understanding to end the war; however, the US started violating the terms of the understanding pertaining to Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz, igniting another round of war that lasted for more than two weeks in July.
The Trump administration has failed to achieve any of its stated objectives in its unprovoked war of aggression against Iran.
