The president of Iran’s Weightlifting Federation (IRIWF), Sajjad Anoushirvani, has been elected secretary general of the Central Asian Weightlifting Federation (CAWF).
The election was held on Wednesday, with Shukrullo Mahmudov of Uzbekistan retaining his position as president, while representatives from Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan were elected to the executive board.
Anoushirvani’s appointment gives Iran a senior administrative position within CAWF and adds to his existing role as head of IRIWF.
The Iranian official has also served on the Executive Board of the Asian Weightlifting Federation (AWF), where he is listed among the federation’s board members representing Iran.
CWF brings together federations from countries, including Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
Anoushiravani has been president of Iran’s Weightlifting Federation since 2022 and is a former Iranian weightlifter who won silver medals at the 2012 Olympic Games and the 2010 World Championships in the 105-kilogram category.
His election comes as Iran seeks to expand its role in Asian weightlifting administration, with the country also having secured the right to host the 2028 Asian Weightlifting Championships on Kish Island.
