Spanish military firefighters battle blaze to the northwest of Madrid

Members of Spain’s Military Emergency Unit worked in rugged terrain as crews sought to contain the blaze in Cuevas de Caart, northeastern Spain.

Bulldozers opened firebreaks through the landscape in Madrid region, creating barriers aimed at preventing the flames from reaching houses.

Firefighters attacked hotspots with water hoses, while technical fire operations were carried out to slow the fire’s advance.

The fire comes as Spain faces another challenging wildfire season. Authorities have been battling multiple major blazes across the country, including fires west of Madrid that prompted the evacuation of more than 19,000 people.

More than 2,000 emergency personnel and aircraft have been deployed to combat the fires, which have threatened populated areas and destroyed homes.
