Iran has strongly condemned a terrorist attack targeting a police checkpoint in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, stressing the need for stronger regional cooperation against terrorism.
In a statement on Saturday evening, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei denounced the attack on the police checkpoint in the city of Tank, offering condolences to the families of those killed as well as to the government and people of neighboring Pakistan.
Baghaei reiterated the Islamic Republic of Iran’s principled position of unequivocally condemning all forms of terrorism and extremism.
“There is no justification for terrorist and violent acts against civilians and security forces,” he said.
The spokesman also stressed the need to strengthen cooperation and coordination among regional countries to ensure an effective and sustained fight against terrorism.
He called for coordinated action to identify, pursue and punish the perpetrators, organizers, supporters and financiers of terrorist acts.
According to Pakistan’s military media wing, a terrorist attack involving a vehicle-borne explosive near a gathering of security forces in Tank on Friday killed 15 people, including 12 Pakistani soldiers.
The attack occurred in the Tank district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in northwestern Pakistan.
Images circulating on Pakistani social media, reportedly from the scene, showed extensive damage to several residential buildings, including a security facility.
