A 20-year-old undertrial prisoner, Rohit Pawar, died while undergoing treatment at Gandhi Hospital after allegedly attempting suicide inside Cherlapally Central Prison. Authorities said he was in judicial remand in a rape case and had been lodged in the prison for around one-and-a-half months.

Hyderabad: An undertrial prisoner lodged in Cherlapally Central Prison died while undergoing treatment at Gandhi Hospital on Wednesday, after allegedly attempting suicide inside the prison.
The victim was identified as Rohit Pawar (20), who was in judicial remand in connection with a rape case registered at Jawaharnagar Police Station in May this year.
He had been lodged in Cherlapally Central Jail for around one and a half months.
According to sources, Rohit allegedly attempted suicide by hanging himself in the jail’s bathroom. The prison staff noticed the incident and immediately shifted him to Gandhi Hospital, where he succumbed during treatment.
Initial reports had suggested that Rohit died a day after being released on bail. However, prison authorities later clarified that he had attempted suicide while in custody and died during treatment at the hospital.
Police and prison authorities are investigating the incident. The exact circumstances leading to the suicide attempt are yet to be ascertained.
