The Imam Reza Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, the local branch of the IRGC in Iran’s Khorasan Razavi Province, says two Basij volunteer forces have been killed while on a security patrol in the holy city of Mashhad.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Imam Reza Guard Corps identified the victims as Seyed Sajjad Alavi and Mehdi Honarmand. According to the statement, the two men were patrolling near Sarafrazan Square, approximately 15 kilometers from the holy shrine of Imam Reza (AS), intending to maintain public order and security when they came under attack and were killed.
The statement added that a pedestrian was also injured during the incident and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
The provincial IRGC unit said that those responsible for the attack would be pursued and dealt with in accordance with the law, adding that authorities are continuing to investigate the incident, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
The development comes as millions of people gathered in the city this week to take part in a funeral procession for the martyred Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.
Ayatollah Khamenei was martyred in a coordinated US-Israeli strike on Tehran at the outset of a 40-day war of aggression against Iran in late February.
