Hyderabad: A 36-year-old woman who attempted suicide by allegedly consuming a poisonous substance aboard the Sabari Express earlier this week died while undergoing treatment at Gandhi Hospital on Wednesday.

The woman was identified as Gulivendula Neelaveni, a resident of Moosapet and a native of Chapra village in Meliaputti mandal of Srikakulam district.

According to the Government Railway Police (GRP), Neelaveni and Sriram Sirish Kumar (34), also from Chapra village, allegedly consumed an unidentified poisonous substance while travelling in the general coach of Train No. 20630 Sabari Express from Coimbatore to Secunderabad on July 7.

As the train approached Secunderabad railway station, both passengers lost consciousness.

Railway Protection Force personnel shifted them to the hospital in an ambulance, where they were admitted for treatment.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Sirish Kumar, who is married and has two children, had allegedly been in a relationship with Neelaveni for the past two months.

Railway Police said the duo had left their native village and were staying in Coimbatore. After tracing them, Sirish Kumar’s wife reportedly persuaded them to return to Hyderabad, and all of them boarded the Sabari Express together.

Police suspect the pair consumed poison during the journey, allegedly unable to cope with the humiliation surrounding their relationship. Neelaveni succumbed during treatment, while Sirish Kumar continues to undergo treatment.

Based on a complaint lodged by Neelaveni’s brother, the GRP registered a case and is investigating.

Neelaveni is survived by her husband and two sons aged 16 and 18.
