Teen survives fifth floor fall after complex life-saving surgeries at Rainbow Hospitals in Hyderabad

A 13-year-old boy who suffered a torn thoracic aorta, severe brain injury, multi-organ failure and multiple fractures after falling from the fifth floor of a building has recovered following emergency surgery and five weeks of intensive treatment at Rainbow Children’s Hospital, Hyderabad.

Hyderabad: A 13-year-old boy who accidentally fell from the fifth floor of a building and sustained life-threatening injuries, including an aortic injury to the heart, brain trauma, multi-organ failure, and a fractured femur, has recovered at Rainbow Hospitals, Banjara Hills.

Immediately after the fall, the child was taken to a nearby hospital and shifted to Rainbow Children’s Hospital at Kukatpally and later to Banjara Hills facility. Tests revealed a 7 cm type 3 traumatic injury to thoracic aorta, torn aorta, severe head injury, pancreatic injury, injury to both lungs, blood in the abdomen and fracture femur.


The doctors conducted emergency endovascular aortic grafting to address the tear in the aorta of the heart and fixed the thigh bone fracture, provided organ support therapies in the form of ventilation, continuous dialysis, medications to maintain blood pressure and provided blood products support. During the first few days, the child was in a coma secondary to severe brain injury.

He started recovering from coma, and after 34 days, the child was removed from the ventilator and was discharged for rehabilitation after 5 weeks.
