Hyderabad: A degree student from the city lost nearly Rs 23.03 lakh to a cyber fraudster who allegedly posed as his father’s relative and threatened to kill his father if the money was not paid.

According to the complaint, the youth from Karthikeya Nagar in Nacharam received a phone call in August 2025 from an unidentified person who introduced himself as Rakesh and claimed to be a relative from his father’s side.

After gaining the student’s trust, the suspect allegedly obtained his father’s phone number and photographs. “He later threatened him, claiming that he was responsible for a road accident involving his father and warning that he would kill him if the student failed to pay,” police said.

Fearing for his father’s safety, the youth transferred Rs 23.03 lakh to the fraudster through multiple transactions. After the suspect stopped responding, the student realised that he had been cheated and lodged a complaint with the cybercrime police on Thursday.

The case is under investigation.
