Forum for a Better Hyderabad mourns passing of Major Shiva Kiran

Major G. Shiva Kiran, 61, retired army officer and prominent civic activist in Hyderabad, passed away on Thursday night at a private hospital in Kondapur. Civic groups and activists have expressed deep condolences at his demise.

Hyderabad: Major G. Shiva Kiran, 61, a retired army officer who was known for his active voluntary efforts in the improvement of civic conditions in the city, died due to illness on Thursday at around 10.10 pm at a private hospital in Kondapur.

Maj Shiva Kiran was undergoing treatment following a complaint of a pancreas-linked tumour operation. His health deteriorated suddenly and he passed away in the hospital. He is survived by his family with two daughters at Kundan Bagh.


He was the founder of Sukuki Exnora, an NGO that actively advocated sustainable practices in garbage collection and segregation since the days of the erstwhile MCH. Major Shiva Kiran was also the founder of Geo Map Society, and he took the initiative to set up the ‘Map Room’ in Telangana.

Maj Shiva Kiran focused on the welfare of ragpickers and established 50 decentralised Zero Waste Projects across the city. He created a Swachh Auto Trolley network consisting of 4,500 trolleys serving across the GHMC. He was also actively engaged in strengthening the activities of residential welfare associations and in networking and bringing together the RWAs on a common platform.

Forum for a Better Hyderabad (FBH) expressed its heartfelt condolences on the demise of Major G. Shiva Kiran.

In a statement, FBH Chairman, Prof.Veda Kumar Manikonda described him as a distinguished social activist who was widely recognized for promoting sustainable waste management, rehabilitating and supporting rag pickers, and tirelessly working to improve civic infrastructure and environmental awareness across Hyderabad.
