Adilabad: Former Sarpanch Gadge Meenakshi successfully harvested Japan’s exotic Miyazaki mango crop at Mukhra (K) village in Echoda mandal on Friday. She had planted saplings of the rare variety to mark the birthday of BRS working president KT Rama Rao in the district four years ago.

Meenakshi, in a statement, said that she harvested fruits from the five Miyazaki plants that she had planted alongside 500 native mango saplings on an empty piece of land in the village during the birthday celebrations of Rama Rao in 2022. Expressing delight, she noted that the premium mangoes fetch up to Rs 2.50 lakh per kg in the international market.

The former Sarpanch recounted that she ventured into the cultivation of the mango trees by procuring saplings from Kerala. She admitted to having initial doubts about their success, given the variety’s preference for cold weather conditions. She was congratulated by locals for accomplishing her pioneering attempt and inspiring others.
