KTR recalls Haritha Haaram, extends World Environment Day greetings

Hyderabad: Wishing people on the occasion of World Environment Day on Friday, BRS working president KT Rama Rao called for collective efforts to protect the environment. He said the need to safeguard Mother Earth was becoming increasingly important in a rapidly advancing technological world.

Recalling the environmental initiatives undertaken during the BRS regime, Rama Rao said Telangana witnessed a remarkable green transformation under the leadership of BRS president and former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao through the flagship Haritha Haaram programme. He said the BRS government planted more than 290 crore saplings across the State and developed thousands of sustainable green spaces, including Urban Forest Parks, Theme Parks, Palle Prakruthi Vanalu and Pattana Prakruthi Vanalu.

The former Minister stated that as a result, Telangana’s forest cover increased from 19,854 sq km in 2015 to 21,214 sq km in 2021, registering a growth of 6.85 per cent, while the overall green cover expanded by 7.7 per cent. He said while India’s overall green cover grew by 0.22 per cent during the period, Telangana alone recorded a 3.07 per cent increase.

Owing to these efforts, Rama Rao said Hyderabad emerged as a global model for urban greening and earned international recognition, including the World Green City Award and the Tree City of the World status. He reminded that the previous BRS government introduced a 10 per cent Green Budget policy, mandating that one-tenth of local body funds be allocated for greening initiatives.

“Let us strive and pledge to protect our Mother Earth on this Environment Day,” he urged people.
