Karimnagar: Karimnagar Rural Police arrested a most wanted criminal, Mohammed Abdul Wajid alias Dhoom Khalid, who had been absconding for the last 10 years.
As he had been missing for many years, many believed that Khalid was dead. However, Karimnagar Rural Police arrested him and produced him before a court.
According to police, Khalid, a resident of Hussainipura, is accused in several cases, including the alleged rape of an engineering student on the outskirts of the town 10 years ago. Following that incident, unknown persons allegedly attacked Khalid and hurled boulders at his legs, fracturing them.
His legs were so badly damaged that doctors had to amputate them after he was hospitalised. Later, police produced him before a court in connection with the rape case. After being released from jail on bail, he went missing.
During the investigation, police came to know that Khalid had escaped to Maharashtra and was operating criminal gangs in Nagpur, Nanded, Chandrapur and Ballarshah. While taking shelter at dargahs in the guise of a beggar, he allegedly continued to engage in criminal activities while moving around in vehicles.
During the last six months, Khalid had allegedly been trying to kill his wife, who is staying on the outskirts of Hyderabad. As part of the plan, he came to Karimnagar on Monday. Rural Police, who came to know about his arrival, rushed to the spot and arrested him.
He is involved in five cases under Karimnagar Rural Police Station limits, two in Karimnagar town and one in Town-II, besides cases in Hyderabad.
