A joint GRP-RPF team seized suspected hawala cash worth Rs 1.2 crore from a passenger aboard the Devagiri Express near Hyderabad. The detained man allegedly transported the money from Mumbai to Secunderabad on behalf of a jewellery businessman for commission.

Railway police seize suspected hawala cash worth Rs 1.2 crore in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: A joint team of the Government Railway Police and Railway Protection Force seized suspected ‘hawala’ cash worth Rs 1.2 crore from a passenger travelling on the Devagiri Express between Bolarum and Malkajgiri railway stations.

The detained person was identified as Vijay Ambadas Gupta, who was allegedly transporting the cash from Mumbai to Secunderabad on the instructions of a Mumbai-based jewellery businessman identified as Santosh Seth.


According to the railway police, the cash was meant to be delivered to a person identified as Bunty, who allegedly operates a jewellery shop at Monda Market in Secunderabad. Gupta allegedly agreed to transport the money for Rs 5,000 commission.

During checking on the train on Tuesday evening, police found Gupta carrying a suspicious luggage bag. On questioning, he allegedly failed to produce valid documents or explain the source and purpose of the cash.
