Hyderabad: What once began as simple hobbies to pass time are now slowly turning into successful small businesses for many young creators. From crochet and candle-making to handmade soaps and decorative flowers, creative hobbies are becoming more than just relaxing activities, they are evolving into sources of income and full-time careers.
Across the city, many people who started experimenting with crafts at home are now building small brands around their handmade creations. With growing interest in personalised and customised products, buyers are increasingly choosing handmade items that feel more unique and thoughtful than mass-produced goods.
One such brand is Petal Theory, a handmade flower business that creates bouquets using pipe cleaners. What started as a pastime has now grown into a small venture built around handcrafted floral arrangements.
“Making flowers by hand started as something I enjoyed doing in my free time, but over time people became interested in buying them. Customers love that the bouquets are handmade and long-lasting,” says Shruthi, founder of Petal Theory.
For many creators, turning hobbies into businesses also comes from reconnecting with activities they once enjoyed as children.
“I used to make candles during summer vacations when I was younger, but I had almost forgotten how much I loved it. After quitting my corporate job, I wanted to start something of my own, and candle-making slowly turned into my business,” says Surabhi Vora, founder of Aira Candles.
From handmade jewellery and resin art to crochet accessories and customised decor, more young creators are exploring ways to transform creative passions into business opportunities. Pop-up markets, exhibitions, and word-of-mouth recommendations are further helping small brands find customers.
As interest in handmade products continues to grow, these small ventures are proving that hobbies today can turn into meaningful careers built on creativity and passion.
